What endorsement deal is next for Graeme?
The endorsement deals are flowing in for 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell. I recently posted about Graeme’s switch to Srixon and I just got word from Ecco that Graeme is now wearing Ecco golf shoes.
Terms of the multi-year deal weren’t disclosed, but I’ve sent an email back to them to see if they’ll release that info.
This week’s PGA Tour event, they Hyundai Tournament of Champions, is an invitational for players who won in the 2010 season. There are no alternates and there’s no Monday qualifying or anything like that.
A stitch in time saves $70,000
Geoff Ogilvy cut his hand in an accident on the beach in Hawaii. He had to get 12 stitches. He’ll likely withdraw after hitting one shot from the tournament, so he can collect the guaranteed $70,000 money.
Geoff Ogilvy’s agent, Pro-Sport Managment’s Paul Galli:
“It’s not so much a big cut, it’s just in an awkward position. It was fairly deep, and when you’re on the reef, you’ve got to be careful with an infection. They cleaned it out and put in some stitches. He hasn’t hit any shots. He was practicing swinging his room and it was giving him discomfort. It’s not ideal.”
How many of you would cut your hand so you could get 12 stitches in Hawaii and then make one golf swing to guarantee 70 grand? Tough gig. How do I volunteer for that?
Stock up now?
I’m freaking out a bit I’ll admit. But reading the latest article on Bloomberg really made this possible scenario hit home.
Fortune Brands has enlisted Morgan Stanley to run an auction of their golf division. There’s a possibility that when Fortune Brands sells off, a.k.a. breaks up its golf division (which includes Titleist, FootJoy and Pinnacle), that someone such as Nike, Adidas or some other entity with about $1.5 billion bucks to spend could buy it and absorb it into their brand. You can be damn sure that if Adidas or Nike bought it, they’d can the Titleist name in a heartbeat.
That scenario would be a shame. The golf world without the Titleist brand is tough to imagine. But I guess business is business.
I admit that when I received the Exsite Golf Practice Tee Brush for review, I poo-poo’d the thing at first. I’ve got so many golf gadgets and things to carry to the range I couldn’t imagine adding one more item to that arsenal. But after using the brush on the range the last two days, I’ve changed my tune a bit and I’ll be bringing it to my future range sessions.
Exsite Golf Practice Tee Brush Overview
The Exsite Golf Practice Tee Brush (EGPTB) is a brush the golfer takes to the range and sticks into the teeing ground via a metal or plastic spike. The player can then easily and conveniently clean clubs between practice shots.

On The Course Range
Being mid December in Salt Lake City, Utah, conditions are very wet and muddy. We’re actually lucky to not be under snow right now. The range is full of standing water and mud. One wedge shot and the entire club face is covered with grass and mud (see frame one on the left above). Using the EGPTB I’m able to clean the clubs very easily between shots (middle frame) without so much as bending over or walking to my bag. The result is a clean club (right frame), which is good.
So Golf Channel wants to mic up some PGA Tour players eh? And by the way folks, being a former audio engineer for 25+ years I want to clarify that the correct spelling is “mic” and not “mike.” “Mic” is short for “microphone” alright?
Is putting mics on the players that great of an idea? Yes it may make the game more interesting, but will it backfire?
I’ve caught some great audio when live golf is on TV. There was the time Fred Couples was in a playoff in some tournament and dumped a tee shot in a water hazard:
“God damn it I hate this f**king game.”
Another time Freddy (love the guy, don’t get me wrong ok?) walks up to a green and despite being just a few feet off the green, his ball is buried deep in grass which the grounds crew must have missed when they mowed. A fan laughs, then Fred looks at him:
“Yeah that’s pretty f**king funny.”
How about the millions of F-bombs Tiger has dropped on the course?
Then there’s the Tiger Woods Buick Invitational fart incident last year. Someone right next to a microphone lets a huge fart go, Tiger and his caddy Steve are laughing uncontrollably. They thought perhaps it was David Feherty. I had that video posted on YouTube, but TGC or CBS or whoever was doing the broadcast that day had it pulled.
On second thought, I like the idea!
