Ben Crenshaw

Ben Crenshaw - perhaps the best putter ever...

Who doesn’t love Ben Crenshaw?  I taught him everything he knows about putting…

Today is Ben’s 59th birthday!

At this year’s Masters Tuesday practice round, we watched Ben on the practice green.  All of the young studs were asking for putting tips and advise from him.  That’s what I’d be doing too.  We then followed Ben down #1.  I shot the photo on the right on #1 tee.

I hope I was close enough to absorb some Ben putting karma.

David Feherty joins Golf Channel broadcast crew

Some golf announcers suck, some don’t.  Some make the broadcast so much more enjoyable with their insights and humor that I look forward to the times when they are on.  David Feherty (pictured) is one of those broadcasters.

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but I’m glad David Feherty will be joining Golf Channel’s broadcast crew.  A new Feherty show on Golf Channel is also in the works.

Davis Love III Joins Bridgestone

Davis Love III

Davis has modeled his swing after mine... yeah, right.

Wow. For so many years I’ve equated Titleist and Davis Love III. But the news today is that DLIII has moved to Bridgestone.  That switch will take some getting used to.

“Freddie (Fred Couples) and I go way back, we’ve played a lot of golf together and I consider him one of my best friends on TOUR. He’s been telling me for years about how great Bridgestone is, so I finally decided to look into them for myself and I liked what I found.  I learned that they have industry-leading products and really creative marketing, two things that really peaked my interest. With the B330-S, I’m getting more distance out of my driver and long irons and I feel very ready to compete in 2011.”

So Davis and Freddy have talked about it.  But I’m betting that Davis has been reading my reviews of the B330-RX series golf balls and that influenced him the most…  🙂

This week DLIII makes his 2011 debut at the Sony Open.  He’ll be putting the B330-S in play for the first time.  He’ll also be using a new Bridgestone tour bag, hat, glove as well as some Bridgestone prototype irons (3-PW).  The release doesn’t mention driver, woods/hybrids, putter or wedges other than PW.  I imagine those will switch over eventually when DLIII has had time to fine tune them.

The Byrd is the word – Johnathan Byrd wins in playoff at Kapalua

Byrd wins at Kapalua

The Byrd is the word

Johnathan Byrd is on a roll. He has won the last two PGA Tour tournament he has started in, both in playoffs. That is quite a turnaround, since he wasn’t even sure he’d keep his tour card at the end of the 2010 season. He punched his ticket to Kapalua and the Hyundai Tournament of Champions with an unbelievable win in Las Vegas by making a hole in one in a playoff to win at the end of 2010.

“I can’t sit here and not think about where I was toward the end of the season last year, fighting for my card. I’m just thankful, I’m overwhelmed, I’m grateful. All of the above.”  ~Johnathn Byrd

Byrd entered a playoff with the tour’s longest hitter, Robert Garrigus. Garrigus missed a par putt on the 2nd playoff hole which would have extended the playoff to a 3rd hole.

Robert Garrigus

Garrigus

The fact that Robert Garrigus was even in that position, given the story of his journey to that point in his life, is also amazing. Garrigus had overcome substance abuse problems and gone through rehabilitation.  To be that low in one’s life, then bounce back to such a high level on the PGA Tour is an amazing feat.

McDowell

Graeme McDowell was one of those players who I mentioned yesterday would need to shoot a serious lights-out score to contend.  He did just that, tying the course record of 62 and bringing himself into the mix.  Graeme had a birdie putt on 18 which wasn’t terribly long, which would have put him into the playoff as well, but that one did not fall.

Stricker

Steve Stricker made bogey on the 1st hole, which when combined with the birdie Byrd made on the same hole, put him two shots back right out of the gate.  He couldn’t quite shoot a low enough score to win or get into the playoff, a two under 71.  Still, I love watching Stricker’s great short game and his simple and beautiful mechanics.

Sony Open

This coming week the Tour stays in Hawaii for the Sony Open. This will be the first “full field” event of the season.  Even John Daly is on his way down there to tee it up.  At the Sony there always seems to be some interesting story relating to a player who was invited like Tad Fujikawa or Michelle Wie.  I wonder what this year’s story will be?  It will be fun to watch.

Happy birthday to my Dad and also Ian Poulter!

Today happens to be the birthday of two really good golfers.  One golfer has partnered with me for many tournament wins and plays golf with me just about every week of the summer.  That golfer is not Ian Poulter, whose birthday is today.  I’m referring to my Dad who turns 74 today.

My Dad has been a huge influence on me and is a very respectable and liked individual in many professional and personal genres.  At 74, he is as active as imaginable with skiing in the winter and golfing in the summer.  I can only hope I make it to his age, let alone being that active.

Skiing Video

I picked up a new GoPro HD video camera recently and I made a little video of my Dad and me skiing at Alta last week.  If you don’t see the video below, click the read more as putting YouTube videos on my home page slows it down.
