Hard for me to watch celebrity pro-ams

The Bob Hope is starting today down in Palm Springs, but I probably won’t be tuning in. When I’m watching golf on TV, I want to watch good golf. I want to watch PGA Tour level play. Otherwise I could go down to the local municipal course and watch a bunch of hacks. I’m not a big fan of watching pro-am tournaments and all the “hit and giggle” of the “celebrities” in the field. I don’t watch a lot of TV so many of these sitcom stars are foreign to me.

Reasons I might tune in, though not likely

That being said, I almost made it a point to tune in because I saw that Eva Longoria was on the list of celebrities. I would watch her swing a golf club any time. Then I read it again and realized it wasn’t the brunette babe from Hot American Housewives (or whatever that show is called), but some baseball player named “Evan” Longoria. Boo hoo.

Two “celebrity” players not in the field which always seem to be in these tournaments are Kenny G and George Lopez. If those guys were in the field, I probably wouldn’t even go in the same room as my TV.

Pin High’s id labels for golf clubs

Thanks to my pals at Pin High for hooking me up with some cool golf club labels.  How many clubs have been lost which may have been returned if only the person’s name was on it?  Yes there are jerks who would keep the club or put it on ebay, but there are honorable people who do turn clubs in to the pro shop when they find them or attempt to find the owner.

Golf Club Id Labels

idlabels in action!

Construction

These aren’t wimpy labels.  These labels actually have six different layers in their construction.  The layers have specific traits which improve the durability, reflectiveness and adhesiveness.  Without the durability and adhesiveness the labels may wear out or fall off, resulting in lost clubs possibly not coming back home to your bag.

Colors

Pin High’s labels come in three colors, so matching them with shaft colors is easy.  The chrome and gold backgrounds have black text, and the black background has gold text.

Customized Online

Pin High’s labels can be customized and created right on the Pin High web site.  Each label can accommodate up to four text lines with a maximum of 20 characters per line.

Conclusion

Tracking down a lost golf club can be a real pain, especially if you are like me and golf a lot.  A club in the bag which doesn’t get used very often may have been lost several rounds ago and contacting all the courses is a hassle.

The cost for Pin High’s labels, $9.95 for 20, is a minor insurance policy which could pay huge dividends if you forget a club somewhere.

AimPro helps you aim, like a pro presumably

AimPro GolfEver notice that Tiger Woods and many other good golfers draw a straight line on their golf ball?  They do that so they can have a good visual alignment aid on the green (and sometimes from tee as well).

AimPro

AimPro is a ball sized ball marker which helps players visualize lines and get their golf ball line lined up.  Wow does that sound like English?  The AimPro has a line which helps line up the line on the ball which is supposed to be lined up on line with the line of the putt.  There, that “line” is better.

All kidding aside, if you have a line on your ball and you’re not sure you have it lined up (oh no, here I go again) correctly, the AimPro system can help.  Theoretically it may be easier to get the line on the marker set correctly than a spherical ball.  So you get the line on the marker set right, and then line the ball’s logo or alignment “art” up with the marker.

Once the ball line is set right and you’ve removed the marker, you can then match the alignment marks on your putter (if the putter has them) with the line on the ball to help with the stroke and putter path.

Conclusion

If you have issues getting your golf ball lined up and consequently missing putts, the $9.95 it would cost to buy an AimPro is not much of a risk.  And if you make a few more putts as a result, you may win back the $9.95 from your betting buddies.

Unsurprisingly, Olazabal named European Ryder Cup captain

As my dad always says, “it is official.”  Jose Maria Olazabal has been named captain of the 2012 European Ryder Cup team.  This news isn’t any big surprise.  It was well known that “Ollie” would be the next captain after assisting Nick Faldo in 2008 and Monty this past year in 2010.

“The two Masters wins at Augusta National are the highlight of my playing career but this is my proudest moment. Golf has been my life and representing Europe in The Ryder Cup has given me so much enjoyment. So to be named the European Ryder Cup captain is something very special and I am looking forward to the next 20 months before we reach Medinah.”~Jose Maria Olazabal

No word on what outerwear Olazabal has chosen yet.

The 2012 Ryder Cup will be held at Medinah Country Club, near Chicago, IL.

Mark Wilson wins 2011 Sony Open

HOG congratulations to Mark Wilson for a great 36 hole performance yesterday at the Sony Open.  With the rain delayed first round, the Tour had to play 36 on Sunday to finish on time.  Wilson fired two bogey free rounds, 65 and 67 (-5, -3) to win the tournament by two shots.

When Wilson pulled his tee shot into the left green side bunker on #17, a 194 yard par-3, I thought perhaps a playoff between him and Tim Clark was looming.  But when he made the clutch putt of nearly 11 feet to save par I knew he had the golf balls to finish it off and win.

Notes

Interesting notes for the Sony Open include a hole in one by Shaun Micheel, though he missed the cut. So the guy misses the cut and makes no dough, but has to buy drinks for everyone.  Ouch.

Camilo Villegas wasn’t disqualified this week, but didn’t make the cut either.  So the Hawaiian swing for Villegas was not a profitable venture as he made zero dollars in prize money.  I feel for his caddy.

John Daly looked fairly consistent and solid.  He just couldn’t score low enough to make the cut, missing it by one shot.

Chris DiMarco played very well, which is nice to see.  He easily made the cut and ended up T30.

Davis Love III didn’t have any issues adjusting to his new equipment after switching from Titleist to Bridgestone.  He played very well with some great ball striking.  DLIII fires four rounds in the 60’s and records a top ten finish.

Stuart Appleby had the lead for a while but couldn’t put together a strong finishing round.  T13.

Surprises

Some surprising performances from players this week were both good and bad.

After such a great performance last week at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Robert Garrigus missed the cut this week.

Others who surprisingly missed the cut include Jim Furyk and Adam Scott.

Made the cut but didn’t play the final two rounds?  HUH?

The Tour’s ever confusing “made the cut but didn’t play the weekend” oddity really throws me for a loop.  Despite technically making the cut and making prize money, players like Zach Johnson, Vijay Singh, Rocco Mediate and Heath Slocum did not play the final two rounds.  A very strange setup.
