The creativity and ingenuity of golf inventors, entrepreneurs and small companies never ceases to amaze me. Case in point today, the Argon Laser Putter.
Concept
I’ve reviewed laser putters before. The concept is simple. A laser beam emitted from the putter face allows the player to check alignment and even “see” a real line to the target, rather than having to imagine one. Being off line by a tiny amount makes putts go off line more and more the farther away you are from the target.
Three Lasers Are Better Than One
Previous laser putters I’ve reviewed had one laser in the center of the club face. The laser was good for checking alignment, but without addressing the ball. Once the ball was positioned in front of the club face it blocked the laser.
With the Argon 3-laser setup this is not a problem. There are two lasers at ground level. One laser is on the heel and one is on the toe of the putter face. The other laser is in the middle of the tall club face. The two ground level beams are not blocked when having a ball positioned at address. The player can see a set of laser rails which give a great visual of the width of the line. The top laser hits the top of the ball.
I’m a confident putter. I seldom lose my concentration. But when I do, I could swear that my eyes are following my putter head rather than staying fixed on the ball. For those who wish to eliminate this problem, or just make sure they’re keeping their eyes on the ball while putting, the Putting Cyclops aims to help. What a name, Putting Cyclops! Their logo is entertaining too, a golf ball with one eye and legs which are golf clubs.
Putting Cyclops Concept
The Putting Cyclops concept is simple: Hide the putter and only show the player the ball in its at-rest position. This way the player focuses on the ball and not the club.
The Cyclops is configurable for left or right handed players.
The unit can also serve as a bit of a side rail to tell the player if his putter is going off line away from the body.
I spent some time today talking with the local Callaway rep. He had a couple of the new putters from Odyssey, the 2-Ball F7 and the White Hot XG Teron.
I really liked both of these putters. They look super cool and the weighting feels very nice.
But the thing I think I like most about these new Odyssey putters, is that they look like ships from Star Trek. See if you can tell which images below are putters, and which ones are Star Trek space ships:

Imagine a golf course which loses $27.40 for each round it books. That’s Reno’s Northgate Golf Course. The course is on track to lose over $500,000 this year, so they just opted to shut it down.
This is too bad. I wonder how many of these we’ll see in the next while. I wonder if golf courses and golf equipment manufacturers are going to adjust their pricing in the current economic “crisis.” Or better yet, maybe we can get Barack Obama to bail out the golf industry…
