This is the second of a three part series I’m going to be doing on sunglasses from Tifosi Optics. Tifosi Optics “enthusiastically” makes eyewear of many types for many different activities, including golf.
Tifosi Gavia Golf Sunglasses
The Tifosi Gavia model glasses are sunglasses with an interchangeable lens. The Gavia model comes with multiple lenses for varying lighting and terrain conditions. You can easily switch lenses for the optimal clarity and focus while on the course, hiking, skiing or doing any outdoor activity.
Technology
The Gavia is made from a nearly indestructible nylon which Tifosi calls “Grimalid TR-90.” This is a homopolyamide nylon with high bending strength, resistance to UV wear, low density (so it’s very light), and high resistance to chemicals. So not only are these glasses durable and strong on and off the course, you could use them in the event of a nuclear war.
The “Hyrdophillic” nose pads are ventilated to aid in slip resistance and comfort. They’re designed to provide even more grip when you are perspiring. The pads are also fully adjustable for you to achieve the right fit and comfort. (more…)
We haven’t seen Phil Mickelson since the Ryder Cup. He went into super secret training. He worked hard in his off-season on conditioning, doing cardio and weights about 6 days a week. He’s dropped 25 pounds and thinks that being in better physical condition will help his game. He said he was fatigued and it hurt his game down the stretch in tournaments etc.. I can buy that, sort of. Well, maybe not.
Mentally Fit?
Though Phil has had times when he was a little overweight, that’s never been his problem in my opinion. Despite his body fat level he’s always had the game, the shots, the skills, the talent.
What needs to be more “fit” for Phil’s game to be at it’s best is his MENTAL side. Phil (and his caddy for that matter) need to work even more on course management and decision making. There was a period of time during the last couple of years where it looked like he’d done just that and what happened? Major victories.
Perhaps if Phil believes being more physically fit will help his game, his mental side will tag along too. Sort of a placebo effect of sorts? Whatever works. Time will tell.
Cleveland Golf has announced some new clubs, right before the PGA Show next week. I’ll hopefully be seeing these babies first hand next week and reporting back on them.
Hi-Bore Irons
First are the new Hi-Bore Irons. These irons “give players of all abilities the benefits of hybrid clubs combined with the versatility and accuracy of traditional irons.”
The Hi-Bore irons are the “most forgiving and longest irons Cleveland has ever made.”
588 RS Wedge
Next are the new 588 RS wedges. The 588 wedge is “designed specifically for players who struggle escaping from bunkers.” The Cleveland 588 has a deep cavity back for absorbing vibration. It also has a large recovery sole and low center of gravity for producing high, soft shots out of all types of lies.
There’s no info on these clubs yet on the Cleveland web site. But there should be soon. (Yes, you get the scoops here folks!)
I did a post a while ago about a cool golf training facility in the Empire State Building which specializes in golf training. Now another golf facility has opened in NYC.
First country club in Manhattan
“Drive 495” is probably the first “country club” located inside a building in Manhattan. This club comes complete with workout facilities and a virtual golf club. The club charges membership dues on a yearly basis just like a standard country club would. The cost is $5,000 per year with a limited membership of 500 to keep down the crowds. Personal trainers and golf instructors range from $100/hour to $350/hour. You can even rent the entire place out for $6,000-$7,000 bucks a night for a corporate event.
Just like a real club
Just like a real golf club, Drive 495 has a cafe, lounge, a real locker room, workout facilities, putting green, virtual driving range/course and more.
Two brothers with large golf balls
The facility was founded by two brothers still in their 20’s, Don and Joe Saladino. They ponied up $4 million to start up the venture. Don and Joe not only have large golf balls for starting this thing up, they have a great ability to drum up venture capital from friends, family and whoever.

The Bob Hope Desert Classic is actually underway (yeah I forgot to change my fantasy team one day earlier so I’m a bonehead with half my fantasy team sitting on the bench). This one is a 5 day tournament and probably caught many fantasy players off guard.
Who annointed George Lopez as the spokesman for golf anyway?
I rant about this tournament every year. The course is easy, the scores are low and worst of all I have to see the likes of George Lopez and other hack “famous people” rather than the pros I’d rather be watching. Am I the only one who doesn’t think George Lopez is even remotely funny? Who put him in charge? Am I the only one who can’t stand to watch this tournament on TV because it is so nauseating watching the likes of Maury Povich and Ray Ramano shanking shots into the crowd?
Golden opportunity
Holy cow. The two worst musicians on the face of the planet are in this tournament together. These two produce the sappiest, cheesiest, corniest, worst excuses for music ever. These are the guys who cause people to want to commit suicide in elevators. I’m talking about kazoo player Kenny G and Michael Bolton.
With these two in the same place at the same time it’s a great opportunity to put the listening public out of it’s misery and drop a bomb on them. Let’s kidnap them and force them to listen to REAL music. Better yet, we can torture them both by forcing them to listen to each other’s “music.”
Hey why not throw in Huey Lewis too? He’s in 3rd place after “G” and Bolton. Wait… I have it. We put them all in a boxing ring and let them duel to the death. That’s it…
Glen Campbell: personal hygiene expert
Anyone remember last year’s Bob Hope tournament with Glen Campbell? When they interviewed him by some green he was drunk and he looked like he hadn’t showered or even combed his ratty long hair in six months. He looked like he’d gone to the Keith Richards school of beauty.
Glen: Mix in a few less drugs and booze and a little more personal hygiene please.
Ok my rant is over. I feel better.
By the way, Phil Michelson tees it up for the first time in 2007 this week. There’s some golf for you.
