As you are probably aware, there have been problems with the server which hosts HOG this weekend. I’ve spent the whole day trying to get the site back online and working, figuring out what the heck was going on. As soon as I’d turn the site on, it would get bogged down immediately.
A “DOS” or “denial of service” attack may have been taking place, where a hacker or hacker’s server was attempting to break in or bring the site down by forcing thousands of requests on the site. It is like thumb wresting with an octopus. It may have also been faulty scripts, bugs or who knows what.
I’m in the midst of tweaking the server and scripts here on HOG and other sites I host. I hope to find solutions to eliminate this problem.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Tony
I’ve been marking my balls in a fun new way lately, with the Tin Cup ball imprinting system.
What is the Tin Cup system?
The system is simple. Each Tin Cup is a plate which snugly covers about half a golf ball. You place the Tin Cup template over the golf ball and draw in the outline or full fill of the die cut pattern with a Sharpie or fine point permanent pen of some sort.
Patterns available
There are currently 23 patterns available. They range from martini glasses to shapes to animals. One pattern, the “From the Tips Universal Marking Tool,” has seven individual shapes in one die. With the 23 patterns available (and I’m sure they’re working on more), you can probably find one which suits your game and your personality.
I’ve got a few patterns but the one I use the most is the big fat arrow. I like to use the arrow as an alignment aid for my shots and putts.
Custom patterns
If one of the stock patterns doesn’t cut it, so to speak, you can order a custom cut Tin Cup. Designs or letters, initials can be cut out of your own Tin Cup for $39. I have a couple of designs I may have made myself, for fun.
Fun
$17.95 Tin Cups are a fun and unique way to mark golf balls, much more fun that just putting dots or lines on the ball with a marker.

I’ve seen this video floating around for a couple of days but I never watched it. I finally did and realized that it was shot at a course about 30 minutes from HOG world headquarters! The announcer, and host of this celebrity tournament is Mark Eaton. I’ve met Mark a couple of times on the golf course. He’s the 7 foot 4 inch tall former center for the Utah Jazz NBA team.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting some neat people in the golf world as a result of this golf blog. One of the best, coolest, most unique, most spunky and down right funny is my close friend Jay Flemma (pictured right in the blue doing his thing). Jay is a talented golf writer, golf blogger and NYC attorney. Jay’s passion and energy for golf is unmatched.
Jay and I have conquered many courses together from Black Mesa in New Mexico to Ballyneal in the plains of Colorado/Nebraska. Through Jay I’ve made many great friends and golf connections, played many incredible courses, and even met my pals from the fun rock band Bowling For Soup. I’ve also gained more knowledge and appreciation of golf course design and course designers like Tom Doak and Jim Engh.
Best wishes to you Jay. Happy birthday my friend and many many more. I look forward to our next adventure.
