I’ve automated this post so that I will publish in the event that I can’t get connected to the golf interwebs. Today is a HOG World Tour travel day. Tough duty, airports and airplanes all day.
Why the long trip to Puerto Rico besides the calm beaches, warm weather, palm trees, rum and of course the little frog Coquí? I’m in town for the grand re-opening of the Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed East Course at the Dorado Beach Resort & Club.
The course has been renovated by the junior version of RTJ, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. What work has he done to the course? I’m about to find out. Here’s their version:
“…original panoramic site lines of the Atlantic Ocean have been restored on 15 of 18 holes through an aggressive tree management program. Native Puerto Rican sand harvested from surrounding beaches highlights the newly renovated and contoured bunker complexes….A course layout that now stretches over 7200 yards, is as formidable from the championship tees as it is forgiving from the forward tee.”
The East Course, by the way, is one of FOUR courses at the resort.
A HOG In The Park
Attending the grand re-opening, playing the course and talking to the RTJ2 design team is enough to make any golf blogger’s head explode but that’s not all. I’ll be joining forces with my long time buddy and interweb golf writer Jay Flemma from the acclaimed golf blog A Walk In The Park and Cybergolf. Jay and I will once again be terrorizing blogging from a world class golf destination as we have many times before. This quote from Jay below sums it up well:
So get psyched, the most badass double-team in sports writing is back to beguile and bedevil, bewitch and bemuse, way more than Beyonce and Beiber. I’ll take my ugly shirt and lure you in like a bullfighter, Tony will HOG-tie you, and we’ll all share pina coladas with Bruce Charlton, Jones, Simon Landon and the rest of the crew.
So for next weekend, I’m rock, Tony’s roll, and you get to live vicariously. So when you’re done cleaning up the leaves, putting out the Halloween candy, and sewing the kids’ costumes (I hear Hobbits are in this year) tune in for the fun here and at Hooked on Golf Blog. We’re back and we’re on tour once again! And I promise, next pic, I’ll be the one wearing black:)
Ways To Tune In
Of course, I’ll be posting photos and whatever possible here on HOG during this HOG World Tour stop. For more up to date images and live commentary go golf social at my Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/TheGolfSpace and Facebook http://www.facebook.com/HookedOnGolfBlog pages.
I’ll be posting photos as I can to the new HOG Dorado Beach Image Gallery. Check there often starting tonight (Thursday) and through the next several days.
Sadly the PGA Tour season is winding down. This week the tour is in Florida for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic on the Disney Palm and Magnolia courses.
The interesting nuggets for the week:
1. Duel for #1 on the Tour money list between Webb Simpson (current #1 in money) and Luke Donald (#2 in money on Tour and #1 in money on European Tour). Luke wants to win both money titles, which would be a hell of an accomplishment.
2. 2nd interesting nugget for this weekend will be watching which bubble players will earn their Tour cards and which ones will come up short.

I’m compelled to post a reader’s recent comments here for a couple of reasons. First, the comments are complimentary of one of my product reviews. Second, it allows me a chance to clarify how some things work here and how I do my golf product reviews or blog posts.
Surprisingly there are many sour pusses who think that all I am is a “shill” for golf companies or that all I’m posting is ads for golf gear or courses. Quite frankly I think they don’t read the posts. I don’t get paid by anyone to post my equipment posts or course reviews. I don’t write my posts so I can get “free gear.” I post whatever I feel like posting on a daily basis because I feel it is interesting to me and may be interesting to those who frequent the site, or just plain love the game of golf. If a company does send me in a sleeve of golf balls, a golf club, a shirt or whatever–the amount of work I put in testing it, shooting photos and writing the posts far exceeds in man hours what it would have cost to go buy the damn thing.
Below is a comment from reader Mike Ryan, who posted on my Bridgestone J40 3+ Fairway review, but was commenting regarding my Adams Idea Tech V3 Hybrid Review…
Tony,
I used to think that you were just a shill for the equipment companies, and trying cadge some free equipment. I took your reviews with a grain of salt.
However I look at you in a new light, I took your advice and tried the Adams Idea Tec V3. I was a confirmed TM guy, but the V3 is far superior. Thanks.I’m not worthy!!!!!!
Mike
My response:
Thanks Mike Ryan. You’re not the first to think that for some reason. I’ve even had people comment that the posts look like advertisements. I put a lot of work into testing the clubs. I usually test clubs a good month at 3-4 rounds per week for my reviews. I shoot my own pictures and spend a lot of time forming my own opinions in my blog posts, but for some reason that goes unnoticed by some who must quickly glance at the site and not really read the entire reviews.
I should post somewhere that IF I post a review, it will for the most part be positive. I try to keep the reviews in a positive light, but still provide constructive criticism if I can. If I receive products which are junk, I’ll usually decline to review them.
So as you can imagine, that comment made my morning and you can see why I wanted to share it. Also it gave me an opportunity to clarify how I like to operate with regards to reviews. I prefer positive posts and articles, and I’ll try to stay on that theme with my reviews if at all possible.
