Perhaps the best legacy I will have left my men’s club in the six years I was president was the creation of the Hell Day Tournament. This tournament, the final one of the year, is where we set up the course in the most hellish and difficult (within reason) way we can. I have several posts on Hell Day, which are listed below.
This is the first year in 7 that I’m not the one setting up the tournament since I’m no longer club president. I’ll have the fun of simply showing up and wondering what each hole has in store. Rumor has it that we will be playing the back nine backwards for starters. I’m sure there will be more nutty stuff. Looking forward to the tournament and season ending banquet. Maybe I’ll win something this year in the drawing, for the first time.
No, I’m not throwing my name in the hat for 2012 club president!

Not going to go deep into a post on this, but wanted to just mention that today is the 12 year anniversary of the tragic death of PGA Champion and two time U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart.
Golf couldn’t have lost a more colorful and honorable gentleman back on October 25, 1999. The game has really missed Stewart’s personality and golf game. I’ve missed it.
Hats off to Payne Stewart.
Finally I’ve found reading material that is down to my level. For the first time in my entire life I’ve read a book which is longer than three pages, from start to finish in one sitting. I guess it takes fart jokes and golf potty humor for me to sustain a high attention level.
While on a plane this past weekend from Dallas to Puerto Rico, I cracked open David Feherty’s book An Idiot For All Seasons. Thanks to my buddy Shanego for the birthday gift by the way. I started the read during taxi and didn’t put the book down until I’d read all 276 pages some 3+ hours later.
About
To me this book is basically a blog in print format. The blog posts chapters are entered in four categories, the four seasons. Within each season are posts relevant to that time frame. Topics covered include Feherty’s experiences working for CBS’s PGA Tour coverage team, his playing career, marrying Tiger Woods, hunting and many other random subjects. At the end of each chapter is an excerpt from Golf Magazine–a question from a reader which he typically answers in a random style which may or may not directly answer the reader’s question.
Keep in mind that this book is not terribly new. It was published back to 2005 so there won’t be anything on the Tiger Woods scandal.
It is interesting to read Feherty’s take on his golf playing career, which seems to be of great interest to his idiots fans who wonder why he doesn’t still play competitively. I particularly like the references to winning the Dunhill Cup as captain of the Irish team at The Old Course in St. Andrews. Having made my first (and not last) pilgrimage to the Home of Golf this past summer, I love hearing stories like that.
“It is a moment that no one will ever be able to take away from me, largely because even I don’t know where I put it.”
Conclusion
Feherty’s twisted self deprecating golf potty humor is brilliantly delivered and quite entertaining. Though not the newest book on the shelf, it is still a very fun read.
With all due respect to Donald Trump, I’m going to start referring to Luke Donald as “THE Donald.”
#1? Yes
Some argue whether or not Donald should be ranked #1 in the world based on the fact that he hasn’t won a major championship and until this past weekend’s win at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s Classic had only one win in 2011 on the PGA Tour. With the impressive win this past weekend Donald locked up the PGA Tour’s money title, which he now holds along side his European Tour money title. That feat is amazing and greatly justifies a #1 ranking.
Awards
Until Luke’s 2nd win, it looked like Keegan Bradley or Webb Simpson were the best candidates for PGA Tour player of the year. Voting starts this week. I’m guessing Donald will win that award, to go with his guaranteed win of the PGA of America player of the year award. The PGA POY award is based on points, not votes.
Needs A Major Victory
For 2012 I’d like to see Luke justify his ranking even more with a major victory. I think it is safe to say that as of right now Donald is the current “best player to never win a major,” a title I previously thought belonged to Lee Westwood.
Adventurous day one of the current HOG World Tour stop in Puerto Rico at the Dorado Beach Resort & Club. Getting here from Salt Lake took about 12 hours, then I spent another 12 hours lost on this gigantic property in my own personal golf cart (comes with the suite, pictured below) in the dark looking for the restaurant! Fortunately I found it, and had the pleasure of sitting down with none other than Chi Chi Rodriguez. During the flights here, I read David Feherty’s 2005 book, An Idiot For All Seasons. First time I’ve sat down and read a book from start to finish. I guess fart humor is the way to keep me glued to the pages…
Man how cool it was to sit and talk to Chi Chi for over an hour and listen to the amazing stories. I even mentioned a shot I saw him hit live in the Jeremy Ranch Shootout decades ago which he REMEMBERED! He told me the club, distance and how close to the hole the shot was! 220 out, uphill, in the face of a bunker, 4-wood, 12 inches, birdie. So many other Chi Chi stories…
The resort room here is fantastic. Here’s a shot of my amazing 3 bedroom suite. My clubs have their own room, closet, bathroom and fridge.
Tomorrow
I’ve gotta call it a night. Tomorrow morning we tee off on the famed East Course here at Dorado Beach for the grand re-opening. You think I’ll shoot some pictures tomorrow?
Gnite.
