Annual Christmas Classic Cancelled Due to Lack Of Snow / Favorable Weather Conditions

I was looking forward to competing in the 2011 rendition of the River Oaks annual Christmas Classic with the 12 balls of Christmas yesterday, but unfortunately the tournament was cancelled.  This is a golf tournament which can only take place when there’s enough snow or bad enough conditions for the course to be closed on Christmas.  Sadly, there wasn’t enough snow on the ground, and the course had players playing full rounds.  We couldn’t do it.  Maybe next year…

For now, enjoy a rerun of the 2010 Christmas Classic video.  2010 Champion and buddy Dan Crookston will get to keep his championship crown (ugly hat) for one more year.

Plane crash

Plane crashes on 17th tee at Oasis Canyons Course - click to zoom

I played the Oasis Canyons Course twice this summer.  Once was during the Mesquite Amateur tournament and one other time when I was in town to say hi to my buddy Adam Schwartz, the head pro there.  The 17th hole is a severely downhill par-3 which is quite fun.  An odd thing I noticed while playing the hole both times was how small airplanes looked like they were about to crash into me.  They were landing at the Mesquite airport, on the hill behind the tee.

Apparently a few days ago, one of those planes had a small problem and did in fact crash into the women’s tee on the 17th.  I asked my buddy Adam about the crash:

The airplane crash was crazy. Luckily nobody was teeing off on #17, but if they were it probably wouldn’t have been a good sight.  The two passengers in the plane were unhurt except a few bumps and bruises.  The plane was transported out the next day as if nothing happened Sunday afternoon.  The only damage the plane did to the golf course was just barely clip the ladies tee box on #17 Canyons.  Never a dull moment in Mesquite to say the least.

Rule 24-2 Immovable Obstruction

How do you play a shot if this plane is in play?

I believe that this airplane on the course falls under USGA rule 24-2 as an immovable obstruction.  Players may take relief from the airplane without penalty, and they may even clean their ball.

Slow day in the golf world, as it will be until the beginning of the year. That is unless some major mind blowing late night holiday car crash sort of thing happens again…  I’ll be working on my year in review so stay tuned for that soon.

Now is a good time to remind HOG readers to follow the various social networks associated with the site.  Starting in 2012 I’ll be working on some prize giveaways and many of those will be for social networking followers so follow HOG and get in on some free golf schwag.

It is a perfect time right now to talk about the new Kentucky Royalty Surino Golf Socks.  Kentucky Royalty is a company founded by Shawn and Lori Malloy.  They’re based out of, well, Kentucky.

Alpaca

I’m fascinated by alpacas.  Very odd creatures.  They look like a three way cross between sheep, giraffes and camels.

The Surino golf socks are made from rare Suri Alpaca, fine Merino wool.  The alpaca fleece comes from USA farms and is spun in American mills.  So if you want to go “made in the USA” with your golf socks here you go.

Features

The best side of the sock, the inside, is lined with soft Suri alpaca wool.  Very soft and comfortable.  The thick wool provides high comfort and temperature control, while also controlling moisture.

The bottom of the sock is covered in skid resistant nylon to prevent slipping and blisters.
