Meeting some famous golfers

(This post is one of an ongoing series about my experience at The Champion’s Challenge)

At The Champion’s Challenge I got to meet a bunch of pretty famous golfers.

haleirwinHale Irwin (pictured putting) walked right by me and I told my kids to track him down and get an autograph. He disappeared into the crowd and the kids didn’t know who he was so they missed him. Somehow my kids got his autograph later in the day and I didn’t even see where or when. Good job kiddies.

Then about 10 seconds later, Fuzzy Zoeller walked by me. He walked in kind of a flowing, sauntering fashion. He didn’t stop when I asked for an autograph on my Masters flag, he just held his hand out while walking. He walked right through the autograph and held the flag behind him and actually never looked at me through the whole process. I’m not a big Fuzzy fan after his Tiger comments, but I want Masters champions on my flag and he is one.

My Jack Nicklaus experience

OK, I’ve had a day to recover from having one of my life long dreams realized: Meeting Jack.

Here’s the story…

This event was a pretty casual one, hosted by Johnny Miller at Thanksgiving Point. It marked the 2nd time I’ve watched Jack play. The first was a Senior Tour event where he was paired up with Arnold Palmer & Lee Trevino. Anyway, this event was a pro-am (what I call “hit and giggle”) and the play was terribly slow. So there was a ton of waiting on the tee shots and waiting on the 2nd shots on par 5’s and 4’s.

We got there early to see some of the pros on the range and putting green. We found all the pro’s carts (yes, they were riding) and bags. All the carts had bags on them but Jack’s. I stood right by Jack’s cart hoping to get an autograph before he teed off. But right before the shotgun time, someone drove his cart away. He was hiding somewhere else…

The tourney started and we found out that Jack started on the 11th hole. So my 3 kids and I headed toward the 11th. We caught Jack teeing off on the 12th hole of this unbelievably long course (over 7700 yards). The shot you see here of his finish is his approach on that par 4. Naturally his shot ended up about 12 feet over the flag where he made the birdie putt.

My buddy John Daly sued The Florida Times-Union and its Web site. He’s saying he was defamed by a columnist who called him a thug and a wife beater.

Helping Billy Casper find his way

billycasperballAfter checking out all the golf carts and their players’ bags I went back up by the clubhouse. I was hanging out by Jack’s cart hoping to get an autograph when Billy Casper walked by. I stopped him and asked him for an autograph on my Masters Flag. He said he was trying to find his cart.

He was a funny, salty old chap and I made a proposition. I knew where his cart was, and he might be walking around for a while before he found it. So I told him I’d show him to his cart IF he signed my Masters flag… “Son, you have a deal.”

While guiding Billy to his cart many fans and other golfers kept stopping him to chat. When he’d finish his chat he’d ask where his guide was. I’d catch his attention and wave him in the right direction.

Finally I got Billy to his cart and he was thankful. He then autographed my Masters flag and a Masters ball.

Thanks Billy, glad to be of service!
