Help HOG win the 2006 Bloggies

I’ve never put HOG in any kind of thing like this but let’s try and see what happens…

The Sixth Annual Weblog Awards (Bloggies) are underway and I’d love to have your support. Just head on over to 2006.bloggies.com and enter HOG. The more pub the site gets, the bigger it gets and the more free drivers and boxes of ProV1’s I can hand out to each visitor….well, maybe not.

I’m bummed they don’t have a sports weblog category. That’s kind of dumb. But these are the categories that I’m shooting for:

Best American Weblog
Best Topical Weblog
Best-Designed Weblog
Weblog of the Year

What is it with Appleby and Kapalua?

Years ago when Fred Couples played so well at Kapalua they called it “Couples-lua.” Now they’re going to have to name it “Applelua” or “Stewalua” or something. Appleby takes a two shot lead into Sunday at -6. Campbell is 2 back, Furyk 3, Glover 4 and Singh 5.

The winds are still high but the pins are a bit more friendly. In fact one pin was extremely friendly to Lucas Glover. Lucas Glover won himself a new car with a hole in one on the 8th hole! It’s not just any car, it’s a Mercedes CLS55 worth about $90,000 (pictured).

Appleby should win unless he makes a major mistake or Campbell has a stellar round. OK, fine. Now Stewart, can you win another tournament? 🙂

Jason Gore almost got his third 80 in a row but instead shot 81. He’s now in last. But the good news for him and anyone else IN the field is that it’s guaranteed dough. I believe last place is good for about $70,000. I feel like I’m perfectly capable of shooting 4 rounds in the 80’s and collecting $70K. I’d love the chance!

The Punch Driver

By the way, it’s been very cool to watch the pros hitting “punch drivers.” Appleby, Singh, Garcia and others have been hitting low stingers with their drivers. The balls are hardly getting off the ground and they’re rolling 50+ yards after they land. Vijay is actually hitting his driver off the deck on the tee! Man these guys are good.

Thanks for the photos Jay!

My buddy Jay Flemma was kind enough to send some great golf course pictures for the HOG Photo Gallery! Check ’em out!

US Open conditions at the Mercedes

Written by: Tony Korologos | Friday, January 6th, 2006

Start with hard greens. Add new and tougher contours than last year’s setup at Kapalua. Throw in winds up to 40 miles per hour. Lastly, put pins right on the edge of the greens or in places where it’s nearly impossible to to get the ball close.

Sound like the US Open? It’s the Mercedes at Kapalua.

I just watched Vijay Singh miss a green in regulation from 4 yards off the green. Yes, 4 yards.

The #5 hole at Kapalua is a very reachable par 5. Many players are getting close to the front edge of the green. The pin is back right, very close to the edge. I’ve watched the likes of David Toms and Sergio Garcia miss this green when approaching it with a putter. Their shots go right by the pin, look like they’re good and then the wind is blowing them off the green and/or into the green side bunker. Sergio chipped onto the 5th to about 4 feet, then the wind blew his shot into the green side bunker. Brutal, plain brutal.

Best score of the day is -1. And what a surprise, Stewart Appleby is in the lead. He’s at -3, one head of Campbell, Toms, Singh and Furyk. Bringing up the rear at +14: Jason Gore and Brad Faxon. Faxon has an excuse as he’s recovering from an ACL injury. Gore just may have sophomore-itis.

Appleby was my pick to win this tournament. What is it with this dude and Kapalua? He owns the place.
