Note: This is the first of a 3-part walk through of The Old Course at St. Andrews by my good friend and Old Course caddy John Boyne (Boynie).  I asked John to give us these hole by hole descriptions for this week’s British Open and he kindly obliged because, well, he’s a hell of a good guy. Tomorrow I’ll post part two, and Wednesday will be part three.  Many thanks to Boynie for doing this special piece just for Hooked On Golf Blog and The Golf Space ~Tony Korologos

The descriptions for the holes that I summarise on the Old Course at St. Andrews will be as if the golfer has found the perfect day for golf on the links – no wind!

1st, Burn, 376 yards, Par4

Should be a relatively straight forward par 4 with the tee shot heading down the widest fairway in golf – 143 yds across the walkway Granny Clarks Wynd – No excuses for missing it really!

My good friend John Boyne (Boynie) is a caddy at St. Andrews. He and I have agreed to do some Q&A about St. Andrews and the upcoming British Open. I’d like you all to post some questions here and I’ll pick a few to submit to him.  Comment them in below and I’ll pick some to submit.

St. Andrews

We DO plan to do a guided tour of The Old Course in three chunks, 6 holes at a time. Boynie will tell us a little about each hole and how the pros should play them and what pitfalls they’ll encounter.

Seve Ballesteros’ doctors have advised him not to attend the British Open at St. Andrews in July.  This is following a scheduled examination where it was determined that the physical and emotional strain on Seve would be too great.

I very much wanted to be at The Open in St Andrews next month to personally thank all the golf fans and friends who have given me their support, not only during these two years, when I have been recovering from my illness but also to thank them for the affection they have shown during my golf career.

I am aware that there might be people who have been preparing their trip to encourage and cheer me up. Hence, I do not want to disappoint anyone at the last minute and after listening to the doctors’ advice I have taken the difficult decision not to travel to St Andrews. ~Seve Ballesteros

PGA.com hits home run over Open weekend

Congrats to my pals at PGA.com.  Their great coverage of the British Open this past weekend resulted in some HUGE numbers.  85 million page views and 624,000 unique visitors per day.  That is up about 45% over last year.

If I could only get them to link to HOG and TGS somehow.  Maybe they’ll trade links…. yeah right.

Cink sinks Watson’s historic bid in playoff at the British Open

I’m pretty heartbroken that Tom Watson couldn’t pull it together enough to finish off the Open on the 18th, when he made bogey from the fairway.  Had he made par he could have won and notched one of the most incredible feats in sports.

Cink won’t be too popular

Despite having a major victory, Cink won’t be too popular for dashing the historic dreams of Watson and millions of fans, myself included.  That being said, he won a major and deserves the credit.
