David Duval withdraws from the British Open

Citing personal reasons, David Duval has withdrawn from the British (I men “THE”) Open Championship.

I imagine this could be the final chapter in the Duval mystery. Something tells me a year or two down the road Duval will only be a distant memory. After using up his “top 25 in career earnings” exemption I certainly don’t see him obtaining a tour card any time soon.

Zero Friction Golf TeeI’ve gotten so many cool types of tees to test this year that I’ve decided to dedicate a whole week to cover them all. Each day next week I’ll be covering one or two types of golf tees along with the regularly scheduled hogblogram.

STAY TUNED FOR “TEE WEEK” ON HOG!

Tiger will skip the Buick Open

As expected Tiger Woods will be skipping next week’s Buick Open to be with his wife and new baby. Despite paying Tiger about $40 million in endorsements over the next five years, Buick doesn’t “require” him to play in any specific events.

I’m guessing the next time we see Tiger will be at the British Open.

Golf’s Three Noble Truths – Book Review

Golf’s Three Noble Truths: The Fine Art of Playing Awake is a Zen/golf book written by James L. Ragonnet. Ragonnet covers Eastern philosophies for the benefit of the reader’s golf game and life in general.

I have a tough time reading books for extended period of time. I get very sleepy a few pages into my reading sessions, so it takes me longer to get through books than the average Joe. That being said, this book is a nice, easy and enjoyable read which kept my attention for much longer periods than I can usually read. The chapters are fairly short and each covers a Zen/Eastern concept or two.

Conclusion

After reading this book I certainly have a different way of looking at my shots, my game and my scores. I have a different attitude and way of processing and approaching my shots, and reacting to the results. I also have a different way of looking at the various challenges, hazards, trees, grass, sand and other parts of the course.

You can pick up Golf’s Three Noble Truths at Amazon. I’ve found them for as little as $11.99.

The Skins Game – Golf Apparel

I’ve got a new favorite golf shirt. It’s my 50% bamboo and 50% polyester performance shirt made by The Skins Game. This shirt is very stylish (see pics) and extremely comfortable. I’m a big bamboo lover for sure — I’ve got other shirts with bamboo in them.

About The Skins Game

The Skins Game is based out of San Diego and has been making golf apparel since 1996. They have PGA Tour player Duffy Waldorf on staff. You’ve probably seen some of the crazy shirts Duffy wears.

Current Styles

Skins Game Makes many different shirts and styles.

— 60% Polyester 40% Bamboo, Moisture Wicking Pique and treated with 3M Scotchgard
— 100% Polyester Aqua Dry
— 100% Pima Cotton
— Holy Moly’s 100% Cotton
— Holly Moly’s 70% Polyester on the outside and 30% on the inside
— Holy Moly’s 3XDRY

My 50/50 shirt doesn’t show on this list so I’m betting it’s a newer product.

These styles can be seen in their PDF catalog and some can be seen in the HOG Skins Game gallery.

Other items

The Skins Game can put custom graphics and embroidery on shirts and also golf towels for your company, promotions, golf tournaments etc.

Critiques

I’m giving a lot of product review web site critiques lately. Sorry if I’m too harsh…. The Skins Game web site really needs an overhaul. It looks like a do-it-yourself site. Their catalog is only available in PDF download format from their site as well. I’d rather have an “online” catalog of their offerings so I don’t have to download and use another application to view their wares. I did download the catalog and though it’s decent, all the items are artist’s renderings rather than actual photos of the products. I’d much rather see the actual photos.

The Skins Game as a Golf Space profile which actually has photos of some of their wares along with some bio info. Check it out at
http://www.thegolfspace.com/skinsgame.

My 2nd concern (not necessarily a critique) is with my shirt. Like most golfers I often have to search for my ball in some unfriendly locations. If I let a tree branch or bush snags on my shirt, it does cause some small thread damage.

Conclusion

My Skins Game shirt is one of the best looking and most comfortable golf shirts I’ve ever worn. I love the style and color combination. I’ve worn and washed the shirt at least 10 times and it hasn’t shrunk or faded. I’ll definitely recommend The Skins Game for great quality and stylish golf shirts.
