Flog Dogs – Coolest Golf Art I’ve Ever Seen

I’ve got a new friend. He brings me good golf karma. He’s a Jones Tribe Flog Dog.

Flog Dog Golf ArtWhat exactly is a Flog Dog?

Flog Dogs are golf statues representing one of four golf god tribes: Jones, Hogan, Palmer and Daly. The Flog Dogs are fashioned from six authentic retired railroad spikes from the Union Pacific Railroad. Each spike is cleaned, bent, welded and power coated. Total weight for a Flog Dog about six pounds.

Uses

Flog Dogs have many uses. First, I could see one being about the most unique golf trophy I could imagine. If you had one of the dogs with a black polished base, you could easily attach a plaque on it for your club champion or tournament winner.

I have my Flog Dog proudly positioned in my very special golf trophy case, where I have lots of special golf items. Simply functioning as a piece of art and a bringer of good karma for my game, Jonesey stands right next to my prized autographed 2005 British Open flag. Yes, that’s Jack Nicklaus’ autograph. I suppose the next Dog down the line could be a Jack Tribe…

Other uses listed on the Flog Dog web site include “golf bookends, golf door stops, paper weights, golf yard art, golf trophies or simply a friend to put in that special place, possibly even a flog boat anchor.”

Hey the Flog Dog staff has a sense of humor. That goes a long way with me. Read their history of the Flog Dog. It’s entertaining.

Flog Dog Jones Golf ArtOther offerings

Flog Dog also offers other golf items. They have men’s and women’s golf polo shirts, 100% pre-shrunk. I have a dark blue one and it’s very comfortable.

The Flog Dog web site lists accessories and custom Flogs as categories but they’re still building the content for those areas.

Take a peek in the “more” section and you can see some Flogs that are in development too. Cool stuff.

Critiques?

I have a couple of critiques for my new friends at Flog Dog. My first is their web site. If you go straight to http://www.flog-dog.com you have to sit through a terribly long flash intro. The intro took nearly one minute to play before it went to their main home page and there’s no “skip intro” button. That’s why the links at the top of my page go directly to http://www.flog-dog.com/index.html … There are a few broken links and some items on the site which don’t align properly too. There are also some content sections on the site which are empty. So a little web site work is needed.

My 2nd critique is on the black polished base my Jones came with. There’s a big screw that comes out of the foot of the statue and goes into the base. But there’s nothing to tighten down or bolt down the statue. You can pick up the statue and possibly have the base fall right off or even worse if you grabbed it by the base the statue might fall out. The fall wouldn’t damage the statue since it’s made of pure steel, but it may damage your floor or break your toes! It would be nice of they added a bolt to the bottom of the base or something to make it a solid attachment.

Flog Dog Golf ArtConclusion

My Flog Dog is one of the coolest golf items I have in my house. It’s so original and cool looking. I strongly recommend getting a Dog for yourself or to use for trophies in your golf tournaments!

Happy Blogday to The Golf Chick

golf chick babeMy friend Kristen aka The Golf Chick has some big news. First is that it’s her 2nd year anniversary of golf blogging! Congrats!

2nd is that she’s FINALLY gotten her own URL and is no longer on blogger. Go to http://www.thegolfchick.com. I’m happy to say I helped a bit in finding her URL for her and suggesting she get her own site. Now her site doesn’t look like a clone of a million other bloggers sites out there with those way over-used blogger templates.

Finally she’s got a new logo! It’s a modernized version of the logo created by bogey man. Nice job Kristen. Hope your 3rd year of golf blogging brings you much success.

Michelle Wie decides not to play the PGA’s John Deer…. THANKFULLY

In the wisest public relations move of her career (perhaps the only wise PR move), Michelle Wie has decided not to play in the PGA Tour’s John Deer. Unfortunately she won’t be able to extend her current streak of cuts missed on the men’s circuit…. Darn.

Now on to some real news…

I cut my toenails today.

Tiger Woods wife Elin gives birth the day after Father’s day

Tiger Woods is now a dad. Less than 24 hours after Father’s Day and his 2nd place finish at the U.S. Open, Tiger’s wife Elin gave birth to a daughter.

It is unknown at this point how this will effect Tiger’s playing schedule. He’s scheduled to host a tournament July 5-8. I bet he does. I imagine he’ll be ready to go for the British Open as well, later in July.

Sorry no winners in the “name Tiger Woods’ baby” contest

The name of Tiger’s new daughter is Sam Alexis Woods. I was expecting something like this:

Eldrick + Elin + Kutilda + Earl + Nike = Nikeldrickarlda

None of the contestants in my name Tiger’s baby contest came close.

Pictures of Tiger Woods’ baby?

I hope to have pictures of Tiger Woods’ baby sometime. Rumor has it the child has a birth mark which looks very similar to a Nike logo…

Sports talk radio announcers suck at golf

I touched on this a couple of days ago. I was driving home from a vacation during Saturday’s round of the U.S. Open. (Congratulations to Angel Cabrera by the way. Great performance…) I’m picking up Fox sports radio and ESPN radio.

ESPN

The ESPN announcers should perhaps research the players’ names before they attempt to say them. They stumbled over Niclas Fasth’s name terribly. They pronounce it like a three syllable “F-ah-seth.”

FOX Blunders

Fox announcers Dan Moriarty and Denny Hawking mention Aaron Baddeley. Their pronunciation is “Bad-uh-lay.” If they knew a damn thing about golf they’d know how to pronounce Badds’ name eh?

“Below” Par?

Hawking and Moriarty are commenting on how the U.S. Open isn’t a typical shootout. They said (paraphrasing) “It’s not a the kind of tournament where they shoot 20 below par.” Um, guys I suppose it’s not terribly incorrect to say “below” par but the common terminology in golf for this is “UNDER” par. I’ll give you an example: “He shot five under par.” It sounds like you don’t know what you’re talking about. Oh wait, perhaps you don’t.

Hey Fox announcers: Make sure you know WHO is playing OK?

These same two announcers are attempting to do some play-by-play. They describe how fast and tough the greens at Oakmont are etc. Then they say (paraphrasing) “Wow these greens are tough. Sergio just missed a 2-3 foot putt and now it’s rolling to about 30 feet away.” That’s great guys. But did you know that SERGIO MISSED THE FREAKING CUT AND WASN’T EVEN PLAYING SATURDAY??? When I got home and watched Saturday’s round on the DVR I figured they saw Pablo Martin. He missed a short putt like that which rolled and rolled away. Nice play-by-play of players who weren’t even on the course. I’ve give you a little clue guys. Usually the TV coverage posts a little graphic on the screen with the guy’s name when he’s hitting a shot. Read that. It may help. I realize you’ll still have to guess on the pronunciation (and you’d certainly not get Pablo Martin’s name right) but give it a try.

Just who IS under (I mean “below”) par?

The last Fox blunder I picked up was when they were describing Tiger’s current Saturday round. Once again paraphrasing: “Tiger is the only player below par today…” Then 20 seconds later: “Steve Stricker posted a 68.” Then another 20 seconds later: “Tiger is playing great. He’s the only player below par today.”

Um, if Steve Stricker posted a 68 then isn’t HE under (I’m sorry, “below”) par too? Gag me.

Let’s get to something important now

The final straw which caused me to bail completely on their radio program and drive home listening to CD’s was when they decided to end their golf segment and go to baseball. Their quote: “Let’s get to something important now.” Well guys I realize I am in the minority but I don’t care about baseball and this IS a major. It IS our country’s national championship.
