The “Major” season is over. How sad. To me that means the golf season is almost done and I’ll be looking out the window in a few months dreaming of when the snow will melt and I can get back out on the course…
Tiger Woods: 2007 PGA Champion
Last week at Firestone I said Tiger looked as good as ever. I mentioned that I doubted he’d get a major with this year until last week and then I changed my tune. Most people expected Tiger to run away with the PGA yesterday and he almost did, especially after shooting his best major score with a 63 on Saturday. But Ernie Els and especially the fireball Woody Austin made it interesting.
Tiger has five more major victories to go before he ties Jack Nickaus’ record of 18. I figure Tiger is good for about 1.5 majors per year so in 3-4 years we’ll have a new record holder.
Woody Austin is great
I loved Woody Austin’s press conference. He got on the press’ case about the way they describe him versus Tiger. He essentially called them on the fact that when he gets mad on the course he’s a “loose cannon” but when Tiger gets mad he’s got “competitive fire.” He also pointed out how stupid it is when they say Tiger hates making bogey worse than anyone else on tour. He said “so all the other players on tour like making bogey?” I love it when players like that point out how stupid some of the media can really be.
Tiger Woods baby
Tiger’s baby Sam Alexis attended her first tournament. So dad is 100% in major wins when his baby daughter is there. She was wearing a red Nike shirt just like pop.
Sergio Garcia was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard today in the 3rd round of the PGA Championship. He wasn’t playing terribly well anyway but did manage to make the cut.
Boo Weekly put in the wrong score on his card, and Garcia didn’t correctly check the scores before signing and leaving the scoring area. Like Garcia said after the British, he’s playing against more adversity than any other player out there… Yeah, right.
Garcia needs an attitude adjustment
On the 18th hole Garcia knocked a shot pretty close, 2-3 feet. He then proceeded to 3-putt. After lipping out the 2nd of the three putts he stood over the ball for an inordinate amount of time and put a mean gaze on the gallery crossing the fairway like it was their fault.
Yup I’ve been there. Someone walking 50 yards away from my two foot putt is always to blame when I miss.
In a pre-round interview before todays 3rd round at the PGA Championship John Daly was asked by Jim Hubert what was in his bag to beat the heat.
Daly, “Four diet cokes, 12 packs of cigarettes, flints and lighter fluid. And then we worry about the golf balls and the other stuff.” …enough for nine holes.
Hubert also mentioned that it was interesting to see John Daly on the range practicing. Daly was quick to correct Hubert, telling him he didn’t practice. Rather he only warmed up.
It’s been a while since I’ve done the golf blog rounds. I’ve been so slammed with golf equipment reviews and golf course reviews I haven’t had a good opportunity. I’ve got well over 100 golf blogs listed in the HOG Master Links section. If you have a golf blog which isn’t in my blogroll, let me know and we’ll exchange links.
My Golf Buddy
My friend Paul runs a great golf site called My Golf Buddy. They connect golfers who are looking for buddies to play. MGB is a golf networking site yes, but very different than The Golf Space. My Golf Buddy has updated its golf blog to a new locale here. Glad to see they’ve gone more original and aren’t using blogger and the tired old blogger templates anymore. So drop by, say hello and tell them HOG sent ya.

The Golf Space, my golf networking site, has over 2200 members now. Each with his or her own golf blog. So in addition to all the golf blogs I have here, there are thousands more golf blogs which can be read here.
I can’t mention everyone. So any whining or sniveling about your blog not being mentioned here will result in a two stroke penalty…
2007 PGA Championship Day Two
Tiger Woods birdied the first hole and never looked back. He had a putt for 62 today which went IN the hole and somehow lipped out. That 62 would have given him sole possession of the lowest score in major championship history. Instead he’ll have to settle for a tie with Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Johnny Miller and a few others at 63.
Going into the weekend Tiger holds the lead by two shots. He’s an unbeatable front-runner so far. He looked so good last week with an eight shot win and still looks amazing and like the tournament is his to loose. The media will be going Tiger crazy now.
Scott Verplank is continuing a surprisingly good year and is currently holding down 2nd place.
Graeme Storm led after day one but faded with a 76.
John Daly held on better than I anticipated today, with a three over 73. He spent a lot of time in the casino and not on the course practicing. He’s at even par.
