2007 PGA Championship Day One

Quite an interesting day one of the PGA Championship.

Sweat

They were all sweating like pigs in the heat and I could hardly stand to look at Davis Love III’s pants. He was so sweaty that his pants were soaked and turned see through. Thank goodness Phil Mickelson’s shirt wasn’t see through…

Cabrera Meltdown

Angel Cabrera had a real fun 6th hole. The 6th is a par three with OB long left. He knocked his tee shot OB, then the next shot OB, then the next in the water, 3-putt and ended up with a 10!

John Daly

John Daly has held the first round lead at some point, in two of the four majors this year. He played no practice round, just like when he won the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick. His 67 (-3) has him in 2nd place. He’s just playing to have fun and not putting pressure on himself. That’s a good plan.

Stormy Thursday

Graeme Storm (who?) is the leader at 65. I’d be lying if I said I knew anything about Graeme so go here for his details.

Tiger

Oh yes I’d better put Tiger Woods name in here for the bots to chew on. Tiger is at +1 (71). Am I the only one that doesn’t buy this hype about Tiger on par 70’s versus par 72’s? Is he not as good of a golfer on par 70’s? Of course not. It’s just useless stats the media produces to create a story when there isn’t one.

Finally played my match against Mr. 62

Club championship semi-final. If I win, I’m in the finals…

It took me almost six weeks to get my match played with Mr. 62, the guy I watched shoot the course record at my home course.

We had a great match and I played very well. We matched birdies three times on the front (the back nine) and ended up even after nine holes.

On the back (the front nine), 62 birdied the first hole to my par and I’m one down. Then I go bogey-bogey, which isn’t going to get it done against a player of this level. He makes pars and all the sudden I’m only two over par yet I’m three down.

I couldn’t overcome that deficit, despite lipping out for several birdies for the next few holes.

He closed me out with three holes to play.

I played really well. I didn’t gag. I was only two over in very high winds on a tough course. He was -1 when he finished me off.

So I dejectedly put my tail between my legs and limp home. There’s always next year.

Swilor/Guru 3 :: The Redemption :: RESULTS

Yesterday’s round was the 3rd meeting in the Swilor/Guru golf blogger matches. The first two were taken by Luke Swilor. The 2nd was a pretty humiliating day for me as I shot my worst score of the year in 45mph winds and lost seven balls while Luke Shot an amazing 70.

Yesterday’s match found me in very good form, striking the ball well and putting well. Luke was not at the top of his game and I was able to come out with the win 6-and-4, with a couple of won presses as well. I caught Luke at a good time for me and a bad time for him.

Highlights for me included eagling the par-5 13th hole (our 4th hole since we played the back first), and birdieing the 17th and 18th holes. My round of 72 was pretty good for me, considering that this lateral hazard ridden course is extremely tight and there was a strong wind all day.

So I’ve finally notched my first win against Luke for a 1-2 record.

I’m happy to announce that Luke Swilor and I will be playing golf today!

I’m hitting the ball decently right now. Last 5 scores, 73, 78, 74, 73, 69. That being said, Luke will still probably be giving me an on-course lesson.
