A tribute to my Mother

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the day my Mom lost her battle with lung cancer. I was holding her hand when she passed.

To this day, hospitals and sick people really hit me hard. When I see people smoking cigarettes I want to get up in their face, smack them upside the head and give them a piece of my mind. When I see teenagers smoking it really kills me.

No BS

My Mom was a straight shooter to say the least. No nonsense. Opinionated and not afraid to let you know it.

Incredible singer

She was the best damn singer you ever heard. Back in the day she beat out Barbra Streisand for singing gigs before she had kids. In her 60’s she started singing again with a local big band. Man it was cool to see her on stage. I still remember the conversations: “Hi Mom. What is up?” Then she’d say “Sorry, can’t talk right now. I’m on the way to a gig.” Man that’s my line.

Mom and I golfed too

My Mom fit in very well at the country club. She got along so well with the ladies there. She had a good golf swing too. I still remember her unique waggle.

So here’s to you Mom. I’m tipping back a glass of wine in your honor.

Introducing Forte Promotions

custom golf tees - The Golf Space networkingPromoting the promotion company who in turn helps promote HOG – makes me dizzy

I’d like you to check a company which I’m working with now who does promotional items (golf or other). They’re called Forte Promotions. I had them make me some Golf Space tees (3000), as well as 500 Hooked On Golf Blog divot tools.

I’m going to be very happy to hand out 500 divot tools to encourage people to fix theirs and five other divots per green.

Super Quality

I’m extremely happy with the golf tees. I chose their longest model so I could get the print looking good and big. The print quality on the tees is about the best I’ve seen.

I’m very impressed with the print quality of the divot tools. If I had it to do all over, I’d change my artwork a bit now that I know how it translates onto the divot tools. I’ll have to hand out that 500 and talk my pals at Forte into doing a new batch with new art I suppose…

I’ll be featuring some other items from Forte Promotions here like the super cool Swiss army knife divot tool. Wait until you see this baby. Stay tuned.

HOG breaks 1900 golf blog posts

1900 Posts

Somehow I missed this about eight golf blog posts ago. This humble golf blog has just surpassed 1900 posts, not to mention just passing 2000 comments.

It is not as easy to comment here as it is on other blogs, and thus there are less comments per post than I’d like. Over the years this site has been slammed by spammers and spambots so I’ve implemented some super high strength countermeasures. Some people don’t like jumping through all the hoops and choose not to comment. To them I say sack up and jump, because I’m not letting the spammers win.

Might as well mention the photo gallery

OK while I’m at it I might as well put a small mention about the HOG Golf Photo Gallery which is currently at nearly 9,000 golf images!

Handicap is going up

I’ve struggled this summer. Unfortunately my schedule has been all thrown out of whack by a “commitment” I made which I’m really regretting. Never again.

As a result my scores haven’t been as low as normal and my handicap has gone up from a 1.3 to a 2.3. This may not seem like a lot, but the closer you are to scratch the more difficult it is to lower your handi. As an example, I’d say it is more difficult to go from a 2 to a 1 than it would be to go from a 25 to a 15. I’ve been trying to get from a 1 to a zero and that is even tougher. I had it to a .9 for two weeks a couple of years ago.

I had a good 71 last week which helped but no super low rounds like the 68 and several 69’s I had last season. The year isn’t over yet, but I’ve got some work to do.

Balls on a wire

Today was my usual Thursday grudge match. We played a different course which wasn’t in our normal rotation. They’d “added” black tees, but essentially the black tees are the same as the old blues. On a couple of holes they extended the tees back on the par-5s. I guess they’re trying to give some defense to this old course from today’s long bombers.

Wired

So on one of those par-5s which was extended something very odd happened. I teed off first and crushed my drive. Best contact of the day. Unfortunately my ball pegged the power line going over the blue tee which was now in the line of fire. I re-teed and hit one good, but not as solid down the middle. My friend John was up next. Guess what? He hit the same damn wire with his drive. What are the odds?

Bets

At the end of the round we tallied up the bets. We play the following bets: Individual player versus player nassau, greenies on every hole, sandies, skins, stars (a buck for 4 pars in a row or better), and finally 6-holers, where we rotate partners every 6 holes.

At the end of each round is a total mess which takes about 30 minutes to settle. Today EVERY bet tied between the three of us. No money changed hands with literally hundreds of possibilities.
