PGA Tour opener may move from Kapalua to new venue

The global financial crisis has hurt many industries who sponsor PGA Tour events. That combined with the fact that the Tour’s contract with Kapalua ends next year, opens up a possibility that the season opening tournament will move to a new location.

Tim Finchem:

“We have one more year on the contract with Kapalua and we are looking at some options in terms of what is the best future for this tournament.”

Personally I’ve grown to love having the Tour open in Kapalua.  It has become a small tradition and I look forward to the positive golf vibe I get in early January.  I love seeing the 400+ yard drives due to the winds and hills of the course.  I especially love seeing all the green grass of the course while I’m bundled up freezing to death in several feet of snow here at home.

I hope the tourney stays in Kapalua, but if it doesn’t I hope they’re able to find a decent replacement.

Geoff Ogilvy books ticket to 2010 Mercedes Championship

Geoff Ogilvy is the first confirmed contestant in the 2010 Mercedes Championship, where only winners from the previous year can play.

Ogilvy ran away from the field with a score of -24. Mighty low.

I didn’t get a chance to watch much of the Mercedes, but I did catch some of the HD broadcast. HD golf is the ticket, if you can’t be there in person.

Happy birthday pop

I’d like to wish my pop a happy birthday, even though he’s not going to be able to read this for a while since he won’t be near a computer. My Dad is the youngest damn 72 ever. He hits my old Titleist 983K driver damn near as far as I hit my driver. If I can hit a ball that well when I’m 72, or if I even make it to 72 I’ll be happy.

Worst winds I’ve ever played in

My round with my local pro and a couple of pals was fun, but cold.  Despite the 50mph winds we still had a good time.   The balls were blowing off the greens and our scores all blew up. Coincidentally, we’re in a town named “Hurricane.”

Still it was good to get out of “white hell” if only for a couple of days.
