Started out shaky as usual at the Salt Lake City Amateur yesterday (Saturday). This tournament is the biggest one of my season, and my nerves are always tough to control. We started on the back with a tough driving hole, ravine short and OB right. I challenged the OB but stayed in. The 2nd shot from 197 with a Bobby Jones hybrid was perfect and ended up pin high right on the fringe. The problem, is that 10 green is one of the most severely sloping and fast greens anywhere. It was practically impossible to get that putt close and stop it at the hole. The ball rolled down to about 15 feet below where I’d take two more putts for a bogey.
I’m back home now, and the final two days of the craziest two weeks in HOG history is here. I’m physically and mentally spent from the last two weeks at the Byron Nelson and the Mesquite Am. The back has been very stiff for a few days. I’m carefully moving so as to not throw it out.
Today and tomorrow the Richard Kramer Salt Lake City Amateur tournament takes place at one of my favorite courses, Bonneville. The tournament is the biggest of the year for me, the one I want to perform the best in. I know I don’t have a chance of winning against the young 20 year old bombers who have no fear and will shoot two 66’s, but I at least want to place in the money. Last year, despite finishing with a double and then a bogey, I finished in the money by a shot.
I’m off to round one this morning. A report will follow.
Great week on the PGA Tour this week. It is Jack Nicklaus’ tournament, The Memorial. Phil Mickelson will be in action. Tiger Woods still injured and will not.

I came into today’s first round of the Mesquite Amateur with high hopes, though I hadn’t hit a golf ball in eight days since being at the Byron Nelson last week. By the 2nd hole of my round though, I’d be in shock at what would turn out to be possibly the most embarrassing moment in my golf tournament history.
On the 2nd hole, I realized my new wedges would not work in this sand. I skulled the ball from one bunker to the next, then took a different wedge in that one to prevent the club from bouncing too much. That one fluffed under the ball. I’d then chip it too far and two putt. I carded a six on a par-3. Haven’t had a triple bogey since I can remember. It would only get worse.
Yesterday I played a practice round for the Mesquite Am at Conestoga Golf Club. Conestoga is located in Mesquite, in a development by Del Webb. I shot a ton of pictures at the course, but in my not so proud moment as a photographer, I realized the camera was setup wrong. All of my shots for the front nine would likely be bad. Reshoot needed. Stay tuned for an update on the Conestoga image gallery. You will love these holes. Very cool course.
After the practice round, 78 thank you, I headed to the demo day at Casablanca Golf Club. Srixon and Callaway were the two biggest vendors there. Callaway ran a long drive contest for all sorts of groups like men, women, seniors etc. That was fun to watch. Winners received gift certificates to any of the six courses in the tournament rotation.
