Yesterday the web and social networks were buzzing with with a large backlash over a 9-11 promotion a Wisconsin golf course advertised. The “12th Anniversary of 9-11” ad offered a round of nine holes for $9.11 or 18 holes for $19.11.
Many thought this was in poor taste, as did I. The course received so much bad press and so many negative social comments that they offered an apology, then saying they’d donate the proceeds to a 9-11 charity. Now it seems they’re considering closing the course today (9/11/13).
I have some other bad golf marketing suggestions this course can try throughout the year:
Columbine High School Massacre Madness Sale
Hurricane Katrina Disaster Discount
Kennedy Assassination Pricing, $19.63 per round
Pearl Harbor Pricing, $19.41 per round
Titanic Golf Savings, $19.12 per round
I’ve been diligently testing two Greg Norman ML75 golf polos recently. I’ve put them through the rigors at the office, through many golf rounds (high and low), laundry batches, and cooking sessions making killer Greek dishes for dinner. Let’s take a look at the ML75 features, then look at how it performed in those varying environments.
ML75 Features
Sizes and Colors
The ML75 comes in many different patterns as well as solid colors. Too many to list, but the two I tested are a great looking striped purple and striped black (see both photos).
Sizes for the ML75 include small, medium, large, extra-large, and double extra-large.
On The Course, In The Office, In The Kitchen, Out On The Town, In The Laundry
First and foremost this polo is great on the golf course. I’ve now worn it in all sorts of conditions, including 94 degree temperatures with nearly 100% humidity. In the high heat and humidity the shirt wicked the moisture away from my body very well and didn’t stick to me during my golf swing. The fit, especially important during the swing, is very comfortable and doesn’t hang up or bind at any point.
In the office the ML75 is very comfortable and certainly very classy. In the kitchen, the olive oil came right out as did the marinara and Greek oregano.
Easy Care
The microfiber polyester is so soft. It feels like silk. Almost as great as the feel is the fact that if washed and dried properly, the shirt will never shrink or wrinkle. That’s a big deal for me.
Critiques
Critiques: NONE. ZERO. ZILCH. NADA.
Conclusion
At $69 retail, the Greg Norman ML75 is a very good value. This polo delivers comfort, style and performance one might expect from polos priced twice as much.

I’d like to personally wish The King, Arnold Palmer, a great 84th birthday. While I grew up on the waning side of Arnie’s career, I still loved to watch him play. I seriously break into tears every time The King leads off the Masters with the ceremonial tee shot. Yeah, I’m soft.
Arnold Palmer after ceremonial tee shot at the Masters
I did follow around Arnie a few times on the course during some Champions Tour (then the Senior Tour) events and it was a blast. Perhaps the best group was the time I followed Arnie, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino. Fantastic. Arnie and Jack didn’t get much of a word in over Lee. No surprise.
Nobody has done for golf what Arnie did. This blog probably would not exist and I’d probably be blogging about pool or something if not for the popularity The King brought to this great game in the 50’s.
Many people have “Arnie stories.” My lovely mother (RIP) had one. She was watching Arnie play during a tournament. After putting out, The King walked up to my mom and gave her a big wink, then went on to the next hole. She melted. I always loved hearing that story from her.
My dad had an Arnie story too. He was a sports writer here for many years and had the opportunity to interview The King for an hour. He asked Arnie, “if I practice as much as you do and hit as many range balls as you, can I beat you?” Arnie’s answer was, “no.” My dad asked Arnie how he could play so great under pressure. What makes him so good? His answer, “I WILL the ball into the hole.” My dad later told me that if he was Arnie’s golf ball, he’d be afraid not to go in the hole.
I hope to have my own similar Arnie story someday.
Thanks for everything Mr. Palmer. Have a great birthday.
