My all time favorite golfer? Not Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus (though Jack is a close 2nd place). That distinction belongs to Bobby Jones. Mr. Jones was quite possibly the best golfer ever. Since he retired from golf at age 28, we will never know how many major championships he would have won. When he retired at 28, Jones had 13 majors. Compare that to Tiger who at age 38 has 14. Do the math. Jack and Tiger might have had another dozen to catch Mr. Jones.
Bobby Jones was not only a great golfer, he dressed the part. Decades after Mr. Jones passed away the Bobby Jones apparel line continues the classy tradition. The line is celebrating its 25th year in business.
Today’s subject is the new Bobby Jones XH20 Aero Polo. Lets take a look.
Materials
This polo is made from a proprietary polyester and lycra blend. These are two great fabrics for sport/golf performance in my book. They provide high moisture wicking, no shrinking, durability, comfort, and most of all easy care. Not much needed in terms of ironing and maintenance. Wash it and lay it down flat to dry.
Style
I really dig the Bobby Jones polo line up. The XH20 Aero Polo is very classy. The color scheme is fantastic. The black/green is such a great combination. I just realized this is almost the exact same scheme as the HOG logo and website theme. No wonder I like it so much.
Along with the great scheme, there’s the knitted collar. Inside the 3-button placket is a little embroidered Bobby Jones figure. Nice.
On The Course/At The Office
The comfort level of this polo is fantastic on the course or in the cube.
The look is very sharp. During the golf swing the polo does not bind or pull anywhere. I’m free to swing in comfort with no distractions.
Conclusion
The Bobby Jones XH20 Aero Polo at $85 is a mid-range priced high performance polo with style to spare.
More Soon
I have a few other Bobby Jones apparel items to review so stay tuned.
Father’s Day alert…
For a few rounds I’ve been testing the Just4Golf.com Knitted Headcovers. Normally I’m not a fan of knitted head covers because the ones I’ve tried in the past lose their elasticity and become shabby and saggy, not staying on the club. These have stayed in good condition however, and are like new after some heavy testing.
Models
Just4Golf’s knitted covers are sized from hybrids to fairways to drivers. There are also blade and mallet putter models. The putter covers come in rubber/plastic materials, but match the knitted versions.
Styles/Colors
Just4Golf makes many styles and colors in their knitted head cover line. The styles pictured I really like. They’re red and black (much better than blue… a college football thing). The pattern is a nice Scottish style, reminding me of my 2nd home in St. Andrews. There are 10 “collections” of styles. Within each collection are multiple variations. There are 100’s of possibilities.
On The Course
These are fun head covers and they look sharp. The covers are easy to put on and take off. Except for the ball on top (see critiques), these covers are thin, light, and not bulky; great for walking golfers.
One great benefit to having these covers on my hybrid, 3-wood, and driver, is that jerks who steal clubs have no idea what is inside. Those three clubs alone in my set probably top $1,000.
Critiques
Often with knitted covers the “ball” on the top of the cover can be too big and bulky. Over time the cover begins to sag and not hold the weight of the ball. I’m not to that point yet, and hoping they stay as new. I could do without the big ball. It just makes things a little tough to deal with when getting clubs out, putting them in the trunk, or traveling. Perhaps a small ball would be better, or no ball at all.
Pricing
Prices are roughly between $17-$24 depending on the model and style.
Conclusion
The Just4Golf knitted head covers are a neat way of going old school. They’re stylish, durable, and fun to use on the course. These head covers would make great, and affordable Father’s Day golf gifts.
I decided to post a top ten list of things golf could (should) do without. Similar to Skynet, the list became self-aware and started writing itself. I tried to pull the plug but it was too late. This list is sure to grow, but for now here are the top 51 things golf can do without. The list is numbered, but not ordered in priority.
“Trash9Network” – Here is a prime example of what golf can do without, complete with trashy content, bad photos, and even misspelling the word “caddie”
Feel free to comment in anything I might have missed. Just don’t put HOG on the list or I might move over to bowling.
Before Sunday’s morning round at Salt Lake City’s Bonneville Golf Course the skies were blue and there was very little wind. That meant an opportunity to get the drone out and do a quick flight before hitting the first tee.
It was a quick seven minute flight without much setup or analysis of lighting etc. I caught a couple of cool aerial photos (click photo below to see them) along with a decent video flyover of the 18th green (above). I’m building a big rig which will carry a much bigger and higher quality camera, so the videos and photos will soon be even better.
Memorial Day here in the USA is a federal holiday for remembering those who have lost their lives serving in the country’s military. I have many golf pals who are veterans of different wars like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. I’m glad those buddies are still around. I’ve lost a few golf pals too, veterans who eventually lost their lives as a result of lasting injuries from the wars they served in, and even from chemical warfare.
Because of my close connection with these great folks, days like this have quite a deep meaning to me. Because of the service of the fine members of our armed forces, we are able to live (and golf) in freedom here.
I made a trip to Washington DC with my family recently. We had the opportunity while there to visit the World War II memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All are very humbling and inspiring places.
To those who serve or served in our armed forces I say hats off. Cheers. Thanks. You have my gratitude. Lets play some golf. Next round is on me.
