Many golfers fish. Many fishermen golf. Other fishermen used to golf…
My best buddy is in town and he’s an avid fly fisherman. He talked me into cancelling my Sunday tee time (your money is safe this week gentlemen) and trying fly fishing with him as my guide. My buddy gave me some lessons and background on the sport and the art, along with lessons on the types of fish and the bugs they eat.
It would seem I did okay for my first time. I caught an 18″ brown trout and a very pretty rainbow trout. I also had several “strikes,” where you snag the fish but it manages to get away. These were all catch and release, as I don’t eat fish.
My first catch.. a brown trout…
There are some similarities between golf and fishing. There is a definite technique to the swing as there is for casting. Eye/hand coordination helps.
There are many differences between the two, some good and some not. The good differences between fishing and golf would include not having to play out of someone else’s divot, five hour rounds, hacks who yell “mashed potatoes,” or having to buy a new fishing rod every 10 minutes (TaylorMade driver release cycle). There also does not seem to be the fishing equivalent of being three under par with two holes to play and shooting 75.
The competitive component to golf is missing from fishing. Examples would be match play, betting, tournaments, etc… Or playing against one’s best score or perhaps trying to come back from a triple bogey to win.
The setting and the company for both are fabulous.
This week’s “bonehead of the week” goes to Golf Channel. I’m fairly sure that Payne Stewart did in fact have two feet. Not a good photoshop job.
Bugger! Where did his foot go?
Also odd that the image is sort of foggy, yet Payne is standing out crystal clear…
UPDATE
Thanks to reader PJ_ONeal for commenting. PJ believes (see comments below) that this is not a photoshop fail, but likely a camera angle in which Payne’s foot was chopped off. I disagree, based on years of graphic design and photoshop. Plus, there’s nothing in the same area of the green to indicate a different level. For fun I did look closer at the image in photoshop:
Here’s a shot from another angle…
Still looks like a bad photoshop to me. But if I’m wrong I’d love to hear about it. I’m more than willing to take a lump if it is deserved.
While on a golf press trip to fabulous Michigan this past week, we visited the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. The museum is about 45-60 minutes from Detroit. I had no idea the museum existed prior to this trip and I’m glad to have experienced such a great place, full of so many historic artifacts not just related to the auto industry.
Inside the Ford Museum were of course, lots of old Ford cars, like the Model T. In addition to the cars there were other items related to the growth of industry , commerce, air travel, and technology. Everything from locomotives to cotton gins to airplanes to machines used on the first Ford assembly lines to create parts for their cars.
Also in the museum is a whole section titled “With Liberty and Justice for All.” Inside that section were all sorts of historic items related to freedom of speech, civil rights, independence, and equality for women. A very special exhibit related to civil rights was the actual bus Rosa Parks rode in when she refused to move to the back of the bus in 1957. I sat in the same seat. It was quite humbling.
The items I enjoyed the most were the Rosa Parks bus, full sized trains/locomotives and the presidential limousines.
If you are in Michigan, around the Detroit area, be sure to visit the Henry Ford Museum. I did not spend enough time there and plan on going back soon to see all the great things I missed.

350 acres. 27 holes. No houses. Dense forest. Dramatic undulations. Large elevation changes. Tough test. Big course.
Today was the last leg of the 2014 HOG World Tour Michigan trip. The venue is was Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club in Carkston, Michigan. What a place.
Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club
Unfortunately the last three days have been very rainy, with literally no blue sky. So my photos are not great.
I’ll post a review and photo gallery of Shepherd’s Hollow soon. Stay tuned.
We tried to get a round in today at Michigan’s Northville Hills, but Mother Nature had other plans. On the 7th tee a black cloud hit with high winds and severe rain.
18th Green – Northville Hills
The rain hit us just as we were ducking for cover in the clubhouse. In just a few seconds we were drenched. Unfortunately there was no chance of getting in the remaining 11 holes.
