Ever try compression socks?  They’re quite amazing.  Somehow the compression of the sock helps circulation, reduces muscle fatigue, and helps prevent bone aches.

Today was my first round testing out some new compression socks from Swiftwick.  I was wearing the Vibe model (pictured right above and pictured below), an ankle high compression sock.  In the heat of 96 degrees my feet felt very comfortable and dry today.

Did a Bridgestone Golf Online Ball Fitting Tune-Up – Confirmed What I Already Suspected

For a quite a while I’ve been gaming the Bridgestone Golf  B330-S golf ball and really loving it. A couple of months ago my supply ran out and I had 2-3 sleeves of  B330’s in the garage, so I decided to see if they felt any different.  Mind you, these are last year’s models.  This year’s model is “improved” but I have yet to test any out to see how much improvement there really is.  So for the last month and a half I’ve been gaming the 2013 B330.  I originally picked the B330-S because it has more spin than the B330.  Surprisingly though, the S feels a bit harder than the B330.  I seem to remember someone at Bridgestone telling me the S was in fact a little harder, which is part of the reason it can spin more.

After gaming the B330’s I do notice they seem softer, which is great for my golfer’s elbow.  It also feels great off the driver.  I’ve found no difference in distance for my granny dual chicken wing over the top swing, both are great.

A screen cap of part of my online fitting with Bridgestone…

Before I restocked I decided to jump on the Bridgestone website and do an online fitting, what they call BFit.  I’ve done a couple of read-deal in-person fittings in the past, but not for a couple of years.  Basically this session would be a confirmation of what I seem to have concluded, that for now my gamer is the B330.  My swing speed is around 100mph, measured recently by the new Swing Caddy launch monitor.  I can get it up to 102 or 103, but not without swinging too hard.  That swing speed puts me on the borderline between a B330-RX series or the B330 series.  I do feel I benefit from the added performance of the B330 and my online fitter “Mellowman” agreed.  I’m sure that was one of his easier fittings.

I’m stoked to get my B330’s back in the bag and I have confidence in what they are doing for me.  I’ve played some very improved golf this season so far, including a 2nd in my flight at the Salt Lake City Am.

I still think it would be fun to do an online fitting and totally mess with the fitter:  “Yeah, can your golf balls fix my hook slice?”

Tried Fly Fishing for the First Time – Didn’t 3-Putt Once

Many golfers fish.  Many fishermen golf.  Other fishermen used to golf…

My best buddy is in town and he’s an avid fly fisherman.  He talked me into cancelling my Sunday tee time (your money is safe this week gentlemen) and trying fly fishing with him as my guide.   My buddy gave me some lessons and background on the sport and the art, along with lessons on the types of fish and the bugs they eat.

It would seem I did okay for my first time.  I caught an 18″ brown trout and a very pretty rainbow trout.  I also had several “strikes,” where you snag the fish but it manages to get away.   These were all catch and release, as I don’t eat fish.

My first catch.. a brown trout...

My first catch.. a brown trout…

There are some similarities between golf and fishing.  There is a definite technique to the swing as there is for casting.  Eye/hand coordination helps.

There are many differences between the two, some good and some not.   The good differences between fishing and golf would include not having to play out of someone else’s divot, five hour rounds, hacks who yell “mashed potatoes,” or having to buy a new fishing rod every 10 minutes (TaylorMade driver release cycle).  There also does not seem to be the fishing equivalent of being three under par with two holes to play and shooting 75.

The competitive component to golf is missing from fishing.  Examples would be match play, betting, tournaments, etc…  Or playing against one’s best score or perhaps trying to come back from a triple bogey to win.

The setting and the company for both are fabulous.

Golf Channel Wins Award for Worst Photoshop of Payne Stewart

This week’s “bonehead of the week” goes to Golf Channel.  I’m fairly sure that Payne Stewart did in fact have two feet.  Not a good photoshop job.

Payne Stewart

Bugger! Where did his foot go?

Also odd that the image is sort of foggy, yet Payne is standing out crystal clear…

UPDATE

Thanks to reader PJ_ONeal for commenting. PJ believes (see comments below) that this is not a photoshop fail, but likely a camera angle in which Payne’s foot was chopped off. I disagree, based on years of graphic design and photoshop. Plus, there’s nothing in the same area of the green to indicate a different level. For fun I did look closer at the image in photoshop:

Here’s a shot from another angle…

Still looks like a bad photoshop to me.  But if I’m wrong I’d love to hear about it.  I’m more than willing to take a lump if it is deserved.

HOG World Tour Visits the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan

While on a golf press trip to fabulous Michigan this past week, we visited the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.  The museum is about 45-60 minutes from Detroit.  I had no idea the museum existed prior to this trip and I’m glad to have experienced such a great place, full of so many historic artifacts not just related to the auto industry.

Inside the Ford Museum were of course, lots of old Ford cars, like the Model T.  In addition to the cars there were other items related to the growth of industry , commerce, air travel, and technology.  Everything from locomotives to cotton gins to airplanes to machines used on the first Ford assembly lines to create parts for their cars.

Also in the museum is a whole section titled “With Liberty and Justice for All.”  Inside that section were all sorts of historic items related to freedom of speech, civil rights, independence, and equality for women.  A very special exhibit related to civil rights was the actual bus Rosa Parks rode in when she refused to move to the back of the bus in 1957.  I sat in the same seat.  It was quite humbling.

The items I enjoyed the most were the Rosa Parks bus, full sized trains/locomotives and the presidential limousines.

If you are in Michigan, around the Detroit area, be sure to visit the Henry Ford Museum.  I did not spend enough time there and plan on going back soon to see all the great things I missed.
