Callaway sues Acushnet over ProV1

Callaway is alleging that Titleist has infringed on 4 or more of their patents in the manufacture of the ProV1 golf ball. Those patents were acquired by Callaway when they bought Top Flite in 2003. Apparently Callaway has been trying to negotiate a settlement with Acushnet (parent company of Titleist) for “quite a while.”

It’s interesting this came up. I was talking to the local Bridgestone rep a week or so ago, and the Titleist rep happened to be in the same room. They looked at each other with evil in their eyes and said nothing. It made me wonder what ever came of Bridgestone’s suit against Acushnet for supposed solid core technology patent infringement. I just found it…that battle is still going.

Who has the best lawyers and the most dough to spend? Who has the most dough to lose if they lose this battle? Acushnet. I imagine they won’t be holding back on defending themselves. Is Johnny Cochrin available?

Mediaguru VS Luke Swilor

MediaE VS Luke Swilor

This Tuesday I get to meet fellow golf blogger Luke Swilor. He’s a young pro who is trying to work his way up to the PGA Tour and blogs about his journey. Check out his blog.

For an inaugural match of my golf blog tour, Luke and I will be playing a round of golf this Tuesday. We’ll be playing at what I’d call a very easy track. This place is flat and straight with big greens. Many of the holes parallel each other, so you could slice the hell out of your drive and still be in a fairway (though it may not be yours).

Place your bets

The line in Vegas right now has me at about a 10 shot underdog. You have a match up of a young bombing pro, versus a 40 year old hack with a granny swing who just picked up his clubs for the first time since last year.

Golf blog tour?

What is the golf blog tour you ask? It’s basically me hooking up with golf bloggers and playing golf with them. I just made it up about 10 seconds ago. I play Luke this week. In about two weeks I’ll be in LA (LA LA Land) to play my good buddy Rich from eatgolf.com. I’m hoping Golf Chick will be in attendance as well. The Golf Grouch was also extended an invitation be he’s too scared and declined, sighting that he had a new job and had to work. Yeah right, chicken. I’m also working on a round with Jay Flemma but we can’t get our schedules and what states we’re in lined up yet.

Oberholser win, Weir meltdown

The Weir “comeback” is still in question I suppose. Today he started the final round at Pebble tied with Aaron Oberholser for the lead. He’d end the day with final a score of 78. Dropping a 78 in the final round of a PGA Tour event when you’re tied for the lead certainly qualifies to be called a meltdown.

Aaron Oberholser shot even par today and won convincingly by 5 strokes. This is his first PGA Tour victory and it may help get him into the Masters.

Strange happenings lately on tour. We’re seeing rounds where the leaders don’t even break par but still win. Nobody is making any kind of a run at the leaders. We’d like to see someone break through the pack and make one of these tourneys interesting for a change..

Kevin Stadler won the Johnnie Walker Classic

Kevin Stadler won the Johnny Walker Classic by avoiding a playoff with an eagle on the final hole. Nice finish.

I met Kevin last summer and talked to him for a while. He was pretty cool. I met his dad that day too and yes, they have the same ass (or lack thereof).

Match play situation on the PGA Tour

Arron Oberholser and Mike Weir are tied at -17 going into today’s final round the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. The nearest competitor, Luke Donald, is 6 shots back.

So it’s basically match play for the day, unless both players gag a few holes and let the field back into it.

Mike Weir

Robert Thompson is watching Weir closely I’m sure. He’s documented Weir (my neighbor BTW) and his struggles since winning the Masters. I’d have to say a win here does mean he’s completed a comeback. But a full comeback to me would mean winning a tournament or two AND contending for most the PGA Tour season.

My DVR will be working hard on this program as I’ll be golfing today for the 2nd time this year. Sunny and a high of 44: that’s golf weather around here.
