TaylorMade TP Blades

This is probably the 2nd to last report from my TM demo day last week.

I got the chance to hit some shots with the TaylorMade TP Blades. I don’t even know the name of these babies. They’re not even listed on TM’s web site yet so I’m calling them the TP Blades. I was told that Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen play them.

Natalie Gulbis

These are most definitely blades. The heads are small. The top line and profile is thin. If you like that Callaway shovel look at the bottom of the club then these aren’t for you. If you miss-hit a lot of shots these also aren’t for you.

Major feedback

My first swing with the 8-iron was an instant feedback event. Zing-buzzzzzzz and half my fingers went numb. I’d miss hit the shot about a half an inch toward the hozel. Ouch. I really concentrated on making contact in the center of the club face from that point on.

Throw some darts

The rest of my shots were right on the center of the face and boy were they butta. This baby flew straight as a laser beam. My dispersion pattern was very narrow. The ball flight was very high. These babies launch the ball on a very high trajectory and with precision accuracy.

Michell Wie might play this club some day

Werk it baby

When I wasn’t trying to hit it straight these blades worked like nobody’s business. I could fashion any kind of curve I wanted in either direction.

Conclusion

Though I didn’t get to put these blades through my typical in depth testing I can tell they’re primo clubs. If you are a “player” I’d check these out. If you are a “playa” and not a “player” then I’d recommend some game improvement clubs.

Did someone trick Applebey into thinking it was the Mercedes?

I’m confused. I thought Stuart Appleby only wins the Mercedes. His “mental coach” must have somehow convinced him the the Shell Houston Open was the Mercedes Championship…

Is it really worth going into the bushes for that ProV1?

The snow has melted and I’ve gone crazy golfing the last couple of weeks. I’ve played oh, let’s see…. ten rounds in the last two weeks. Some good, some not so good.

During a round at a very nice club here in town last Friday (8 days ago) I had an experience I hope not to relive. I was on the 14th hole which is a par 5. I blasted a huge drive on this dog right to about 240 out. There was a group just getting on the green so I had some time to kill while waiting for the green to clear.

I wondered over to the right side of the dog leg. This spot usually has tons of balls from players who pushed or sliced their drives, or just thought they were man enough to carry the corner. There I saw a brand spankin’ new ProV1 just waiting to join his friends in my bag. I had to grab a club and go through some fairly thick vegetation to get it but I managed.

By the time I was done the green was clear and I knocked my TP 3-wood to about 8 feet. I missed the eagle putt but had an easy birdie.

Right after my putt I felt a pretty strong itch on my leg. I’d been bitten by some damn bug in those bushes.! I itched it throughout the round.

The next day my leg REALLY itched and the two little red dots on my leg expanded to a very large boil/blister looking thing. It got bigger and bigger. Then my left leg started to itch and the same little red dots and subsequent boils.

Poison IvyNever had it before, but I managed to get poison oak or ivy. I thought poison ivy just itched a bit and gave you a rash that lasted a day or two. A little web research and a trip to the pharmacy and I learned that poison ivy can be brutal. In extreme cases entire sections of peoples flesh can look like they have 3rd degree burns. The effects can last two weeks or longer.

The poison ivy leaves have a very strong oil which gets on your skin and causes the burns. This oil is so strong I was told to scrub the area several times per day, wash my clothes several times and only use towels and washcloths once before washing them.

I apparently got the oil on my right leg, and when I crossed my legs working on my laptop in my favorite chair the oil went to the other leg. I also apparently itched the leg then touched my left bicep and right waist line. Boils there too.

It takes roughly a couple of weeks for the irritation to subside. But in some extreme cases the oil gets under the persons skin and a surgical procedure is required to remove it. I’m told it’s very painful.

So I’m 8 days into what hopefully is no more than 14 days of terrible itching and irritation.

The next time you see a shiny ProV in the bushes, look around and make sure it’s “safe” to go in there.

1st impressions of the TaylorMade TP Red ball

A “friend” of mine at TM got me some TP reds to play with. The Red is comparable to the ProV1 and the Black comparable to the ProV1x.

Started out with 9 straight pars. I found the ball to compress nicely. I hate the really hard balls that don’t compress easily. The length and flight off the driver was great. Very nice trajectory off the irons and woods. I didn’t play in much wind so I can’t really say how good of a wind ball it is. But with the big dimples I bet it’s similar to the V1x with regards to the wind.

I had a couple of shots which required me to manufacture trajectories and curves…..Ok, I was behind a tree and had to hit a low running hook around it. The ball did exactly what it was supposed to and from 188 yards I ran that hook up to about 5 feet. Not the best putting day for me. I didn’t make that putt for birdie.

Putting with the ball felt great. The TP Red print lines up with the seam just like ProV1’s and that’s how I line up the ball on the green.

Only problem was shearing. I shredded the ball 2-3 times with full 56 degree wedges. On one 70 yard lob I flew the ball over the green into the 2nd cut and the thing spun back onto the green to pin high! Major spin. The ball had shavings sticking up on it from that 70 yard shot. So durability wise you might wear one out with a bunch of full wedges.

Over all it’s a great high performance ball.
