Before I get on with this short review I need to preface it. I’m not a big fan of “health food” or “organic” items. I really want to like health food, but I seldom find health food items that taste good, or have any taste at all for that matter. I also don’t like almonds or nuts of any kind. Hmmm. Doesn’t sound like I’m the right person to do this review. Since there’s nobody else here I guess I’ll have to proceed.

Sun Valley Bar

Ann Scales (specialty foods caterer) and Sara Walker (athlete and baker) founded Sun Valley Bar in 2004. Their goal was to make tasty and nutritious sports bars. They’ve been growing the company ever since and have now expanded into the golf market.

Par Bar

Par Bar is a nutrition bar dedicated to golf. Great name. It definitely has a ring to it.

The par bar series comes in four flavors:

Cranberry Almond
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip
Chocolate Chocolate Chip
Goji Lemon

I put all four Par Bars in my golf bag this spring. I was especially stoked to taste the Goji Lemon version. To my disappointment, being the picky eater I am, I didn’t really enjoy any of the bars. They all contain some sort of nut based butter (almond or peanut) and they all contain almonds and walnuts. The lemon was downright unpleasant to me.

My apologies to Sun Valley Bar. Perhaps I should have just given them to a golf buddy and asked for his opinions, rather than trying them myself. Then again, my dislike for the bars is probably bodes well for those who actually do like health food.

Golf ball review: 2009 Titleist Pro V1x

2009 Titleist Pro V1x Golf BallSome reviews I really want to take my time and play a whole bunch of golf before I write them.  This is the case with the new Titleist Pro V1x.  I’ve played roughly my last 10 rounds or so with the new Pro V1x, enough rounds to experience the ups and downs of my normal game.  For the last couple of weeks it has been ups, which doesn’t suck.

Technology

The new ProV1x has had some changes under the hood.  It is no secret that Titleist had to change the ProV1 series due to their losing a court battle with Callaway over the way the ball is made.

Four pieces/layers

The Pro V1x is a four piece/layer ball.  The first layer, in the center of the ball is called the inner core.  The inner core is 1″ in diameter and made of a material called Polybutadiene.  Polybutadiene is a highly durable synthetic rubber commonly used for tires or coating electronic assemblies.

The 2nd layer is the outer core.  The outer core is 1.55″ in diameter and also made of Polybutadiene.

Layer three is called the casing.  The casing is .035″ of ionomer, a highly durable plastic/rubber.

The fourth layer (are we done with layers yet?) is a urethane elastomer, .03″ thick.

Why all the layers?  What do they do?

Dottie Pepper calls out Sergio Garcia

Lately I’ve had a bit of a middle age crush on Dottie Pepper.  Well that just spiked because Dottie called out Sergio for his childish behavior/comments at the Masters.  You go girl.

No athlete is beyond making knucklehead moves with the media — I have my own long list of regrets — but you can turn such a misstep into a positive by dealing with it honestly. When you do apologize, as Sergio did two days later, don’t issue a statement that sounds as if another person wrote it. (I can’t recall hearing Sergio use the word iconic before.) Fans forgive those who ‘fess up and take responsibility. Such contrition goes hand in hand with taking responsibility for your own game, a key to succeeding, as Kenny Perry did after just plain ol’ losing the Masters. Sergio will have plenty of opportunity to make amends at the Players. If he doesn’t, I can’t begin to imagine how brutal the U.S. Open fans are going to be at Bethpage.

Love ’em or not, I’d rather have announcers like Dottie Pepper and Johnny Miller who have enough golf balls to call a spade a spade and aren’t afraid to have an opinion.  I’d much rather hear that than hear them spewing out a bunch of generic panderous rubbish.

My game is showing very positive signs

Here in Salt Lake we don’t really have spring or fall.  We go straight from 24″ of snow, to 85 degree temps three days later.  That really happened last week.

Perhaps it is the warmer temps.  Perhaps it is the fact that I’ve been playing and especially “practicing” more.  My game is definitely showing signs of coming out of hybernation.  My last four rounds are, 73, 72, 73, 73.

I’m trying to put together a complete 18 holes.  In round one above that score included a 33 on the front nine, the harder nine of my home course.  Round two had a 33 on the back.  Round three had a 35 on the front.  Yesterday I got in about 13 holes due to the crowd and running out of daylight.  When I finished I was -2, with a 32 on the back nine.

If I could just put two nines together in one complete round we’re talking mid 60’s for a score.  Perhaps that will happen today.

Last evaluation round before my new ProV1x review

I’m looking forward to today.  I’m playing one of my favorite courses (one of my three “home” courses) with my best golf buddy.  Marius from the new golf accessory compnay Sumi-g will be joining us too.   I’m also looking forward to putting on decent greens since the ones I’ve been putting on home course #1 really suck.

Today will mark the final round of about 10 that I’ve been playing with the new Titleist ProV1x.  I’ve been waiting to write my review of the new ProV1x so I could give an honest evaluation of how the thing putts on good greens.
