Tortured by my first look at the FootJoy Icon golf shoes

Today is July 22nd, 2009.  I should rename it to “FootJoy Day.”  Today it is all FootJoy, all the time.

I just finished telling someone how my back is so tweaked right now that I can’t even put shoes or socks on.  I’m bent over like the huchback with these severe, stabbing pains in my back due to my scoliosis.  I pushed the back too hard this weekend and now I’m paying the price.

A good kind of pain

So while I’m here suffering, sitting bent to the left at a 32 degree angle (the only angle which doesn’t result in extreme stabbing pain), the doorbell rings.  FedEx was here to deliver my latest shiny golf toys, a pair of FootJoy Icons.

This is great.  I get to “look” at these beautiful golf shoes and perhaps drool on them a bit if I can crawl across the room to them.  I won’t be able to try them out for at least a few days, when my back spasms subside.  When I do, I’ll be starting my evaluation and getting ready for an Icon reveiw.  Stay tuned.

Until then, I hope you enjoy a couple of pics of the Icons.  If you want to see a few more, I have about 10-15 in my Icon gallery too.

FootJoy enters golf social networking realm with the FootJoy Community

I’m very good pals with FootJoy.  They’re sponsors of this year’s fantasy golf for one, and I’ve reviewed their gear as well with more reviews on the way.  Can you say FootJoy Icon Review?  Soon.

FJ is now in beta with a social networking engine similar to my other site The Golf Space, only obviously with a FJ flare.  “FootJoy Community” can be found at http://www.footjoy.com/myfootjoy.

Great start

The site looks great.  FJ and Titleist are really good at making very simple and elegant web pages which aren’t too complicated with too much flash junk flying around and doing loops.  I hope they keep them that way.

I had some registration bugs and could only sign up with the basic profile fields filled out.  After getting logged in I was able to fill out the rest of my profile.  Small things like that are to be expected when you’re in beta so no worries.

13 year old son breaks the Fat Bastard

My strange day continues…

So my son Michael is growing, fast.  He’s 13 and almost as tall as me.  But I always let him know I’m much better looking than he is….

Today was time to take his golf training wheels off and get him hitting a big boy driver, instead of the junior driver he was hitting.  I knew the perfect club for him, the 460cc Fat Bastard square driver.

The Fat Bastard has a regular shaft and a 10.5 degree loft.  The weighting is great and the thing is super easy to hit.  I would have kept it in my bag if I could have gotten a 9.5 and a stiff shaft, but since I couldn’t it has been in the garage waiting for today.

On the range Michael quickly got used to this new club and started to really crush it.  I mean 250 with a draw.  That had me frightened really.  Six months to a year from now my 13 year old could be knocking his drives past me.

I’ve hit the FB as well as several buddies.  But my boy was the one who broke it.  I’ve never even broken a club, except the one and only time I ever threw a club in disgust.

Michael is very bummed because he loved this club.  I could see the twinkle in his eye when he made full contact and launched it.  I’ll see if my pal “Hit ’em goode” has a replacement for him.

I shot a “2” today

Today was to be a league day, 18 holes.  Then this afternoon while my boy was in golf camp I’d be on the range tweaking my swing for a couple of hours.  That isn’t going to happen.

Shot a “2” today

On the par-5 first hole today I hit two shots.  While approaching my 3rd shot my back went out.  I had to quit and now I’m at home on pain killers, rolling around on Miracle Balls hoping to untweak myself.

I have Scoliosis which is a birth defect in the spine.  If I lift heavy things or strain my back, a nerve pinches and I’m in severe pain for about a week.  The pain can get so bad that I’m not even able to put my socks on.

Sometimes it can take a day or two for the injury to surface after I’ve strained my back.  This past weekend I lifted heavy things, and I rode a bunch of roller coasters at an amusement park.  One or both of those combined sealed my fate 48 hours later.

Bad timing

There’s no “good” timing for a golfer’s back to go out.  But this week it is really bad.  Saturday is a tournament I’m already signed up for.  My home course hosts the city amateur every year.  I’ve missed this tourney since day one and finally my schedule allowed me to be there.   I could certainly place in the money in this event, but now it isn’t looking good.

Congrats to my pals at PGA.com.  Their great coverage of the British Open this past weekend resulted in some HUGE numbers.  85 million page views and 624,000 unique visitors per day.  That is up about 45% over last year.

If I could only get them to link to HOG and TGS somehow.  Maybe they’ll trade links…. yeah right.
