Golf in the Kingdom (Paperback Book) by Michael Murphy
I’m not a big book reader, haven’t been forever. When I start reading I get a few pages in and I get really tired and want to go to sleep. But recently after getting my eyes checked I found that I’ve probably been suffering from eye fatigue. Now that I have my new geek specs I can spend more time reading, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but haven’t been able to.

For Christmas one of my very close golf pals gave me the book Golf in the Kingdom by Michael Murphy. This book has been around for decades and has sold over a million copies. Golf In The Kingdom is a fictional book related to the zen and mysticism of golf.

This book takes place in a place called “Burningbush Links” which essentially is the fictional representation of St. Andrews. The main character of the book “Michael” meets an odd golf pro named “Shivas Irons” who takes him on a mystical Zen golf journey on and off the course. I’m not going elaborate on the story. I’d just suggest you pick up a copy and check it out.

With my new specs and the great writing and flow of this book I finished this book in two sittings. That’s a world record for me. I like this book so much that it now holds the position of my 2nd favorite golf book. My favorite, which will probably never be dethroned, is Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book.

    Great to hear (and interesting about your eyes). Golf prose is some of my favorite stuff to read. I’d strongly suggest:

    * The Soul of Golf by Hallberg
    * Lure of the Links (edited collection)
    * Hogan by Sampson (essential)
    * Any of John Feinstein’s many golf books (The Majors is a great one to read first)
    * Golf Dreams by John Updike. It includes my all time favorite golf story: Farrell’s Caddy.

    ‘Tis a good one.
