Jack Nicklaus will join Arnold Palmer as honorary starter at the 2010 Masters

I just mentioned the fact that I’m GOING to Augusta for my first time next year in the last post.  Last night I invited the 2nd of my three guests, my best golf pal whose name happens to be “Arnie.”

Jack Nicklaus will be joining the other “Arnie,” Mr. Palmer next year at The Masters as honorary starter.

“We are delighted and fortunate to have such a great ambassador and icon of our sport take part in this tradition.  He has inspired generations of golfers and having Jack join Arnold on the first tee next April will be a special thrill for his many loyal fans around the world.”  ~Masters chairman Billy Payne

Billy is right.  Jack has inspired many, including me.  I had the pleasure of meeting Jack a few years ago and he was VERY nice and easy to talk to.

“I have always had great respect for Arnold and his legacy at the Masters and I did not, in any way, want to infringe on the opportunity for Arnold to have and enjoy this Masters tradition for himself.  He is so deserving of this honor, and thus I felt it was his time, not mine.”  ~Jack Nicklaus on Arnold Palmer’s reign as solo starter.

Fist pumping at the mailbox

For the last several years, at least five, I’ve been religiously sending in my application for Masters practice round tickets.  For years I’ve waited for that envelope from golf Mecca, Augusta National, to arrive.

This year I missed the deadline.  I realized a day or two late, that I’d forgotten to send in my information to get into the Masters practice round lottery.

I thought to myself, “it has only been a couple of days, so just send it in anyway…”

Fist pumping at the mailbox

Today I had a fun round of golf with my Dad, my uncle and a good friend.  I had a great practice session on the range but couldn’t bring it onto the course.  My round was at best, mediocre.

When I got home I checked the mail, which lately hasn’t been all that thrilling.  All there usually is in my mailbox is junk mail and bills.  Today was different.  Today changed what I’ll be doing the first week in April, forever.

I finally won the practice round lottery.  I’m going to The Masters in 2010.  I had goose bumps.  I had goose bumps again when I told my 13 year old son, that he was coming to The Masters with me.  He thought going to the practice rounds meant watching Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson on the driving range, he had no idea that we were going to be on “the grounds” walking every hole and taking about 402,038 pictures.

Masters Tickets

Why did this change my first week in April “forever?”  Because once you get practice round tickets for one year, you are automatically eligible for the next year.  No lottery.

I couldn’t be happier.  I have four tickets.  One for me, my son and two special people who I’ll name shortly.

Tiger will be glad to hear that I approve his web site redesign

TigerWoods.com has been revamped. Not sure exactly when since I don’t frequent it a ton, but fairly recently. I’m much happier with the new function and features of the site versus the old one. The old one looked cool, but it was all flash based, and restricted to the fairly small container they built.

The new site isn’t flash based (which is really good), and contains much more content, videos, blogs, photos of Tiger woods etc.

<rant>

Did you webpreneurs out there hear that? You may think Flash is cool with all the animations, sound effects and things flying around your screen, but that stuff gets old faster than you can say “loading…. loading…. loading….”

Yes, as I’ve said before, only two people like all the Flash animations and sound effects in web sites:

1. The Flash designer.
2. The person who paid the Flash designer.

</rant>

Speaking of Tiger’s web site, he posted a new blog today about going into the “playoffs” (cough). I’ll save the “playoff” rant for another day.
