Phil Mickelson has confirmed he’ll be playing in the final major of the year, the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine.  This is good.

Will the fourth and final major of the year have a big name winner?  So far, no big names like Phil, Tiger, Sergio…

Buick will no longer sponsor Buick Open

There are few PGA Tour tournaments which I actually use the sponsor’s name when describing them.  Typically I try to leave sponsor’s names out because I feel they devalue the event, plus sponsors come and go.  I prefer to call it the “Bob Hope” instead of the “Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.”

One which is hard not to use the sponsor’s name is the Buick Open, which has been around for about 50 years with Buick as the title sponsor.  That is apparently going to come to an end after this year.

So I wonder who will be the next sponsor of the Buick Open.  Perhaps Volkswagen?  “Welcome to the 2010 Volkswagen Buick Open.”

Mon: 2:30 – 4:30 p.m ET on The Golf Channel

Heck of a leaderboard right now with Retief Goosen, Anthony Kim and others all with a chance to win.  Mike Weir isn’t out of the realm of possibilities either at four back.  Watching PGA Tour golf on Monday doesn’t suck!

Mark Calcavecchia sets new PGA Tour record with NINE birdies in a row

Anyone have Calc on their fantasy team today?  Mark Calcavecchia birdied holes 3-11 today in the Canadian Open.  That is a new PGA Tour record and also insanely good.

My personal record is five in a row.  I remember vividly… (Sound of harps, dream state ensues)….  I was playing straight up, nine holes against the #1 amateur in the state.  Yes that isn’t generally a good idea.  Under normal conditions he’d crush me.  But I birdied the first five holes, en route to a one up victory after nine.  Yes, one up.  He ran out of holes.  Needless to say, he was not happy.  I was.

I receive about 20-30 press releases a DAY.  Most are the same tired old ones, but this one seemed worth posting, because it meant that HOG readers would have a chance at winning free stuff.  Free stuff is the best!

Mirassou Winery is giving away a golf getaway and tickets to the LPGA CVS/Pharmacy Challenge:

One winner and a guest will receive the California wine and golf getaway of a lifetime, including round-trip air transportation to San Francisco, hotel accommodations, VIP passes to the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge tournament, a meet and greet with a LPGA player, and more. Plus, the winners will also dine California-style at a special dinner with wine expert David Mirassou. Visit http://www.mirassou.com/golf/sweepstakes.asp to enter now through July 31.

Also at www.mirassou.com/golf is the “Perfect Pairings” online cookbook, which features delicious recipes and Mirassou wine pairings from LPGA Tour members Kristy McPherson, Laura Diaz and Jill McGill, along with video golf tips from the players.

Maybe I’ll enter the thing myself.   I’ll win and the unnamed LPGA player I’ll get to meet will be Anna Rawson… 😉
