This hasn’t been a very good year. I’ve just lost my 2nd buddy to cancer: Jake Almond.
Jake was a pretty old guy, about 79. He was a member at one of my clubs since probably before I was born. He played there so often he owned his own custom golf cart which the course allowed him to park in their cart barn. I played dozens of rounds with Jake.
He was really funny in the last few years. He had a really low and gravelly voice and mumbled a lot. We usually just smiled and said “yeah” even though we had no idea what he was saying.
This death hit my Thursday playing buddy of many years very hard because he was much closer to Jake than I was. Our Thursday game yesterday was very quiet and none of us really cared how well we played because we knew in the grand scheme of life it just doesn’t matter that much.
Here’s a toast to Jake.
