I’ve had some inside info on this for some time and I figured it would happen after playing some rounds of golf with my friend Eddie Peck, principal of Black Mesa. Eddie and I played Ballyneal a couple of years ago and Eddie was there not only for the golf, but to do research on Tom Doak’s design work. It is now confirmed that my favorite course designer Tom Doak (Ballyneal, Stonewall, Pacific Dunes and many others) will be designing a 2nd course at Black Mesa. Check out my review of Black Mesa here.
Having played the wonderful Black Mesa course and having seen the land the new course will be built on first hand, I’m super stoked to see what Doak will be doing there.

Here’s a little video/pic show of yesterday’s Hell Day tournament.
Today marked the final day of my men’s association’s year. At the banquet this evening, I was unanimously voted as club president. There are no term limits for this position so I’ll be “Mr. President” for a fifth consecutive year.
Being club president means a bunch of labor intensive work (score keeping and handicaps, tournaments). It also means listening to many players whine about why they didn’t win last week or why their handicap “went down” (yeah, lame). But it also means I get to continue reaping the benefit of complimentary golf for me and my family. It doesn’t suck to be able to play “free” (relatively) golf and even take my boy out for a few holes before dark. For the number of rounds I play on this course in a year, that would amount to thousands of bucks. Glad to be doing it again this year.
I’ve been the president of my men’s association for four years now. One of the “fun” tournaments I started was the “Hell Day” tournament. This is the last tournament of the year and close to Halloween.
On Hell Day we make the course super hard. We put the tee boxes on dirt roads 50-100 yards behind the tips like on #10, where it is 320 yards to the fairway. We put the pins on the tiers, which resulted in me 11-putting a couple of years ago. We make players hit into bunkers. We put pumpkins on the greens and players have to putt around them.
This year we’re re-routing the course. So hole 12 is played from hole 13 tee. Hole 13 involves a tee shot from 12, to 13 fairway, to 14 green (see picture above)…
I’ll post some photos and more info when the tournament is over.
Chuck and me. (Check out my cool shirt)
In an interview with CNN’s Campbell Brown, my pal Chuck said he was going to run for governor of Alabama:
Brown: So are you going to run for governor?
Barkley: I plan on it in 2014.
Brown: You are serious.
Barkley: I am, I can’t screw up Alabama.
Brown: There is no place to go but up in your view?
Barkley: We are number 48 in everything and Arkansas and Mississippi aren’t going anywhere.
…Chuck has a point there.
