Proofreading the Bali Hai web site
I’m doing some freelance writing about Vegas golf courses. In doing my research I’ve found a few typos on the Bali Hai web site. You think with the budget Bali Hai must have, they’d have someone spell check and proof their text before they publish it:
bit hitters can play over the bunker on the right side…
I may not be a “big” hitter but I’m certainly a “bit” hitter.
The second shot should be played beyond the cart path and oft of the bunker just short of the green.
I usually play my shots “oft” the bunkers too. I find it werkz bitter thet waye.

Before I head out this morning to get on the waiting list at my favorite public course here since I forgot to get a tee time, I need to send happy birthday wishes to the KING!
Happy 80th birthday to Arnold Palmer (pictured teeing off at his 50th Masters). Arnold changed golf with his image and likability. Arnie was a pioneer in player/athlete endorsements, leading the way for players of today like Tiger Woods to make millions off the course. Of course thanks to Arnie, we have The Golf Channel. We can watch golf 24 hours a day because of the king. Well, we can watch Tiger Woods 24 hours a day but I digress.
Best of all Arnie was fun to watch on the course with his passion for the game and for competition. I had the pleasure of watching Arnie play on the “Senior Tour” and also watched his practice sessions as well.
Years ago my dad was a sports writer and interviewed Mr. Palmer in his prime. My dad asked him if he could beat Arnie if he practiced as much as he did. Arnie said no.
Played craps with Arnie
Years ago a buddy of mine and I were in Mesquite Nevada golfing. In the evening we went to gamble and there was a huge crowd at the craps table. We squeezed in and started playing figuring it was a good game to get in on. At the other end of the table throwing the dice was none other than the King. He was in town designing a golf course. I’ve played that course many times.
Happy birthday to the King, Arnold Palmer. I can’t wait to get tears in my eyes once again when Arnie (and now Jack Nickalus) start off the 2010 Masters.
A little somber after explaining who Payne Stewart was to my son
I’m doing my normal gig, golf blogging. A picture of Payne Stewart is on my screen and my 13 year old son asks “who is Payne Stewart?” That is a question not lightly answered.
I spent the next 10 minutes or so telling him about Payne Stewart, from his wardrobe to his major victories, how popular he was, and of course the tragic end.
I’m a little down now.
2nd smoking area in Salt Lake City discovered
Good news for smokers here in Salt Lake City, Utah. I’ve just found a 2nd smoking area here, pictured below. The smoking area I just discovered is on the 11th hole at Mt. Dell Canyon course. This course is located in Parley’s Canyon, between Salt Lake and Park City. Interviewing some smokers in the fairway they said it was a bit inconvenient to leave work downtown and drive 37 minutes up the canyon to take a smoke break, but it was something they were willing to do.
Anywhere between the tee and the green on #11 is a designated smoking area. This can be a tough driving hole, with all the smokers standing around smoking between the tee and the green.
In case you are wondering, the first smoking area I discovered here in SLC is on the 13th hole at Bonneville Golf Course. I found that back on November 15, 2007.

You won’t believe what I got from BlackSocks.com. Take a guess. Okay I’ll tell you. Black socks! Can you believe there’s a web site dedicated to black socks? Actually they have other items too like underwear and shirts. If the underwear is black would they be called “tighty blackies?”
Since Gary Player and I have the same wardrobe consultant
Half of my golf apparel is black. That way it matches the other half. My black socks go right along with my black shoes, black shirts and black shorts. I wonder if Mr. Player’s socks are made in Morocco like mine though.
BlackSocks.com’s Shorty Socks
The “Shorty” model of black socks is super comfortable. They’re made from 87% cotton fibers and are enriched with 1% Elasthan and 12% Polyamid. I actually have no idea what Elasthan and Polyamid are, but the socks are stretchy, smoooooth and very comfortable. They also breathe quite well.
Your Porsche and your socks have a spoiler
Ever have your socks slip into your shoe in the back? This is extremely irritating. The Shorty sock has a thicker area above the heel called a spoiler. The spoiler insures that the sock won’t slip down into the shoe.
The only disadvantage to the spoiler, other than increased aerodynamics, is getting debris inside the back of the sock. If you’re like me and have to hunt through the desert and dry brush for errant shots some debris will end up in there. That problem is easily resolved though. Hit better golf shots.
I’d be curious to see if BlackSocks.com’s underwear has a spoiler and how that is implemented…
