As of now, 9:44am ET, a few players have gotten their first rounds started. The biggest fireworks so far are credited to Retief Goosen, who eagled the par-4 first hole. He’s atop the leaderboard, leading 7 other layers by one shot at -2.

Ah yes. Time for another edition of “Stupid Press Questions.” Yesterday was a virtual buffet of moronic questions by the bonehead scribes in the Masters press room.
Scribe: “Tiger, do you still believe you will break the major record?”
Tiger just looks at the guy…
My answer: “No. I don’t think so. I suck. I’ve lost my game. I’m thinking of taking up a new sport, like bowling.”
Scribe: “Tiger, do you feel ready this week?”
What kind of answer does this idiot expect, a no?
My answer: “Honestly I’m not ready. I mean, I’ve had months to prepare for the year’s first major and I’m completely lost. I can’t putt. I can’t chip. I have no game plan worked out. In fact I appreciate you asking me this. I think I’m going to withdraw.”
Scribe: “Jack as you were coming down the back nine in 86, did you feel 46?”
Jack: “I hope so. That was a great age.”
My answer: “You know, I was thinking I felt more like 45.39839849.”
Scribe asks Phil Mickelson: “How important is your short game this week?”
This is one of the dumbest questions I’ve ever heard. This media guy has waited all winter and spring to ask this question? He had months to prepare and asks a question this dumb? Amazing.
My answer: “Short game at The Masters is completely unimportant. I plan on hitting all 72 greens in regulation, so I haven’t worked on it at all.”
In the live press conference a few minutes ago, Phil Mickelson just mentioned that he will be playing two drivers this week at the Masters. He will be removing the 3-iron and hybrid from the bag as he won’t need those because of anticipated higher temperatures and shorter 2nd shots on the par-5’s which will only require 4-iron or less.
Not “fade” versus “draw” drivers
Contrary to popular belief, his drivers aren’t two different setups with regards to one being a fade bias and the other a draw bias. The difference is that one driver is one inch longer than the other. The longer driver will be in use on holes 1, 2 and 8, providing about an extra 15 yards of carry to clear fairway bunkers.
Not playing Tuesday practice round
Phil will not be playing in the practice round today because the conditions will be so different compared to the weekend.
Below are the pairings for the first round of the 2011 Masters.
Group 6 looks fun with Duston Johnson, Nick Watney and Adam Scott. Group 14 is a big one with #1 ranked Martin Kaymer, #2 ranked Lee Westwood and #10 ranked Matt Kuchar. Group 16 has Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell. Phil Mickelson is in the 2nd to last group with world #1 amateur Peter Uihlein and Geoff Ogilvy.
