Wow. Never thought I’d say this, but Tiger Woods is playing the Frys.com event in October. The event is played October 6-9 (the 9th being my birthday) in CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, CA.
Frys.com Open president Duke Butler estimates with Tiger’s appearance that the attendance would rise from 25,000 to 70,000.
Media scramble and some funny comments
With this announcement I’m sure some of the regular golf media scribes are scrambling to add this event to their travel schedule and some joked about not even knowing what city the event is in or when it is.
Next time you play in one of those three club tournaments here’s your bag, the Club Stick. The Club Stick is a plastic stick which holds three clubs and can either stand up via a fork which goes into the turf, or a clip which hangs on the side of a golf bag.
Benefits
The main benefit to the Club Stick I can see is keeping clubs dry which you bring to the green area or away from your bag. Nice to keep the clubs and grips off the wet grass.
Lately my greens in regulation is so bad (50%), that I’m always bringing 2-3 clubs to greens. I put those three in the Club Stick and all I have to do is grab it and head to the green. No digging in the golf bag for my putter, lob wedge and 8-iron (the three clubs I’ll need to get up and down).
Critiques
The Club Stick web site claims that the product will improve the golfing experience because it lets you “focus less on managing your gear.” That seems a bit of a contradiction, since the unit would be an additional piece of gear to manage, but I get it.
Conclusion
One of the better accessory offerings for keeping club grips dry. Convenient for the range or those who like gadgets on the course. Don’t think serious players would use it, but the casual 18 handicapper might.

Robert Duvall as "Johnny Crawford" in Seven Days In Utopia
When I started this golf blog in 2004 there were a couple of things I never expected would happen as a result. The 1st would be possessing enough BBQ sauce to last the rest of my life and beyond. The 2nd would be interviewing an academy award winning actor. Who could have imagined?
Robert Duvall talks about the film Seven Days In Utopia
Years ago I read the novel Golf’s Sacred Journey. I enjoyed the story. This Friday, September 2nd 2011, the movie based on that novel, Seven Days In Utopia hits theaters. My review of the film will be posted the day the movie opens.
I had the great pleasure of interviewing Robert Duvall about his major role in the movie as the character “Johnny Crawford.” What a cool cat Mr. Duvall is. It would have taken me 12 years to type out the interview, so instead I put the audio up with some still images on a YouTube video. Enjoy.
Dustin Johnson moves to #1 in FedEx Cup points
Dustin Johnson goes -19 to win the first round of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the Barclays. -19? Wow. Like I mentioned on twitter, as much as I love Donal Ross courses, most are so old that they’re way too short for Tour players. Oh, I forgot to mention that the -19 score was in an event shortened to 54 holes! Wow.
The funny part about DJ’s demolition of this course, is that he tore up the front and didn’t do that much on the back! DJ was -2 on the back. Yes, the side which had two par-5’s and a 289 yard par-4. DJ was -17 on the front, with two rounds of 29 and one 30. The front only had one par-5.
Stats
DJ’s stats for the Barclays are quite impressive. Here are a few reasons DJ won:
T2 in eagles
T1 in birdies (21)
T5 in bogeys
2nd in driving distance
T8 in putts per round
T7 in putts per green in regulation
T9 in greens in regulation
T1 in sand saves
Now DJ is in a great position in FedEx Cup points, 1st.
The ever consistent Matt Kuchar moved himself up the food chain quite a bit with the 2nd place finish, though he probably should have gotten himself into a playoff with DJ were it not for the two consecutive bogeys on the back in the final round. Kuch moves from 12th to 2nd in playoff points.
Brand Snedeker and Vijay Singh improved their causes in the playoff race, moving from 18th to 6th and 36th to 8th respectively. Singh was not playing terribly well earlier this year, but seems to be sniffing blood or in this case, sniffing the the $10 million in cash.

I brought out a new Mizuno MP T-11 wedge, courtesy of Mizuno, to the range on Monday to shoot some pictures of it and start my evaluation out for an upcoming review here on HOG. What do you know? Someone stole it before I’d even had the chance to take the shrink wrap off of the head. They must have grabbed it when I’d walked down a few stalls to talk to a couple of buddies who were on the range.
Memo to whoever stole that wedge
Karma and the golf gods will have their way with you. I bet you start suffering from the yips and shanks. You will be getting bad breaks on the course from this point on, because you deserve it.
