If you have trouble with gauging distance on the putting green here’s a golf accessory which might help.

Personal Stimpmeter and measuring device can help you fine tune your distance control on the greens. Click for more images.

The Golf Green SpeedReader is a portable Stimpmeter and putting stroke measuring device.  There are two basic functions the device features.

2/3 Scale Stimpmeter

The first feature of the device is a 2/3 scale Stimpmeter.  A Stimpmeter is a device used to measure the speed of putting greens.  You may hear during the Masters or PGA Tour tournaments for instance, that the “greens are a 12 on the Stimpmeter.”  Slow greens measure on the “stimp” at around 8, medium 10 and fast 12+.

The Green SpeedReader is 2/3 scale, meaning that a ball which rolls 2 feet on the device would roll 3 feet on a Stimpmeter.

24 Inch Ruler

The second feature of the device is a simple 24 inch ruler.  The ruler is useful for a couple of different functions.  It measures the length ball rolls and can also serve as a measuring device for the putting stroke length.

How It Works

The process is simple.  Roll a few balls on the green with the unit and measure how far they travel.  Then lay down the ruler near your putter and work to figure out how long a putting stroke will send the ball precisely that distance.  You’ll have a visual representation and feedback on how long the putt will roll versus what Stimp rating the putt measures at.

Another useful byproduct of the ruler, is that it can be used close to the putter to align the stroke.

Feherty is a winner, at least on TV

David Feherty

The Feherty show has me watching TGC for more than just live Tour golf again...

I’ve been a David Feherty and Gary McCord fan for years.  I hear McCord mentioned my blog in the latest version of his book Golf For Dummies, but got my URL wrong. Oops.

I don’t watch much TV at all, mostly the bigger golf tournaments and my Utah Utes football team.  That damn USC game Saturday was one of the strangest games I’ve ever seen, but it is nice to be in the Pac 12 now.

I’m drifting a bit from my point, which is that the Feherty Show is a great show.  I used to watch some of the other shows on the Golf Channel like Big Break, but I got a little tired of hearing “someone’s going home.”  So I limited my viewing on TGC to PGA Tour golf tournaments.  But the Feherty show has me back watching more than just PGA Tour tournaments or the occasional LPGA or Champions events.  Even my wife, who doesn’t even know which end of a putter to hold, likes the show.

I know Feherty didn’t win much when he played on tour, but the show is a big win and I’ll keep watching.

9/11 golf flagPlayed a nice round today at my home course River Oaks with the director of golf and my buddy Shanego who was in from out of town. The round started out quite shaky, but I pulled it together thanks to my buddy Guy and his nice tip on my swing.  I managed a 73 after shooting a much better back nine at -2.

9/11 Flags

At the course today they had a nice touch in the course setup to commemorate the ten year anniversary of 9/11. All of the golf flags were American flags. Nicely played River…

Today is Arnold Palmer’s 82nd birthday.

Arnold Palmer

Arnold Palmer in the Masters opening ceremony, 2011

To date I still haven’t met Mr. Palmer, but I hope to some day.  I have had the pleasure of watching him play on the then Senior Tour in a threesome with Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino.  That was a blast.  Arnie also drove by me on hole #12 at Augusta in a golf cart at the Tuesday practice round of the Masters in 2010.  That’s the closest I’ve gotten so far!

Happy 82nd to the King.
