My SpeedBlade Irons Fitting at the Local TaylorMade Performance Lab

I’ll be reviewing a custom built set of TaylorMade SpeedBlade irons soon. For them to be custom built to my specs, I had to spend some time in the local TaylorMade Performance Lab having my “granny over the top dual chicken wing” swing analyzed.  For a couple of very fun and educational hours my pal (the TMPL tech) Stacey and I did some deep granny dual chicken wing swing analysis.

TaylorMade Performance Lab

I want to walk around town with all of these sensors on my body…

The system TM has for swing analysis is amazing. You wear sensors all over your body as well as the golf club, and the computer does complete 3D golf swing analysis, even comparing your swing to pro players like Dustin Johnson. Needless to say, Dustin’s specs are slightly better than mine.

The system produces a recommended setup, then the tech builds test clubs with those settings on the spot. My settings were regular length, stiff shaft, and two degrees flat.

We took the clubs out to the heated driving bay outside. There’s still a lot of snow on the ground, but we still hit some range balls so we could see how the true setup worked.  That’s how the “my nipples hurt” tweet happened yesterday, a little chafing from the cold.  I hit the 7-iron very straight and accurately.  It launched at an angle that looked like a 9-iron or pitching wedge.  Never before have I hit a 7-iron that high. For comparison I hit the same club without the two degree flattening of the lie. Almost couldn’t hit the thing. Quite remarkable.

I even took some swings with a custom made SLDR driver, a 12 degree model. It flew.

I’m submitting my specs to TaylorMade today and they’ll be soon whipping up my full set of SpeedBlade irons (and hopefully some other clubs to match them…hint hint). Then I’ll hope the snow melts asap so I can put the irons to the real test, on the course. If the snow doesn’t melt, I may have to take a trip south.

Stay tuned.

Golf Ball on Alligator’s Head – Play it as it Lies?

Written by: Tony Korologos | Wednesday, February 5th, 2014

So your ball comes to rest on the head of an alligator. Do you have to play it from there and risk personal injury or DEATH? Of course not…

The Rules of Golf cover “dangerous situations” like bee hives, alligators, and snakes.

http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Decision-01/#1-4/10

Q.A player’s ball comes to rest in a situation dangerous to the player, e.g., near a live rattlesnake or a bees’ nest. In equity (Rule 1-4), does the player have any options in addition to playing the ball as it lies or, if applicable, proceeding under Rule 26 or 28?

A.Yes. It is unreasonable to expect the player to play from such a dangerous situation and unfair to require the player to incur a penalty under Rule 26 (Water Hazards) or Rule 28 (Ball Unplayable).

If the ball lay through the green, the player may, without penalty, drop a ball within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest spot not nearer the hole that is not dangerous and is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.

If the ball lay in a hazard, the player may drop a ball, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest spot not nearer the hole that is not dangerous. If possible, the ball must be dropped in the same hazard and, if not possible, in a similar nearby hazard, but in either case not nearer the hole. If it is not possible for the player to drop the ball in a hazard, he may drop it, under penalty of one stroke, outside the hazard, keeping the point where the original ball lay between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped.

If the ball lay on the putting green, the player may, without penalty, place a ball at the nearest spot not nearer the hole that is not dangerous and that is not in a hazard.

If interference by anything other than the dangerous situation makes the stroke clearly impracticable or if the situation would be dangerous only through the use of a clearly unreasonable stroke or an unnecessarily abnormal stance, swing, or direction of play, the player may not take relief as prescribed above, but he is not precluded from proceeding under Rule 26 or 28 if applicable.

Boy do I have a lot of golf equipment to test when the snow melts…

In for review is a nice looking driver cover from Rose & Fire.  The materials are solid and this looks to be nicely designed and constructed as well.

I’ll put this baby into the review queue and start testing as soon as the snow melts.  Thanks for your patience.

Puma Golf Monolite Shoes

It is full-on winter here.  Two more inches of snow on the ground this morning.  I have a lot of golf gear to review, but I’m afraid any real rounds of golf here are going to be a month or two away.  Maybe we’ll get lucky and a heat wave will come.  Come on global warming…

In for review are some sweet Puma Monoite hybrid golf shoes.  Hybrid means they’re wearable on the course or off the course.  The only testing I’ve managed with these so far is wearing them to the office and around town.  So far great results.  No golf swings yet.  Stay tuned for my full  Puma Golf Monolite golf shoe review when the weather breaks.

Nice treads…

Until then you check the HOG image gallery for a few more Puma Golf Monolite golf shoe photos.

Super Bowl 48 – Denver Shanks One OB on the First Tee, Erin Andrews Phallic Microphone

Erin Andrews phallic mic – Nice play Fox Sprots audio crew!

Yesterday’s Super Bowl was entertaining on a few levels.  First, thanks to my brother-in-law for pointing out how phallic the microphone sideline reporter Erin Andrews was using and posting this pic to Facebook.  As a former audio engineer and recording studio owner, I’ve never seen a microphone windscreen shaped like that.  Great joke by the Fox audio crew.  Nicely played Fox Sports!

Sometimes my golf game is like the performance the Denver Broncos put on Sunday. From their first snap, which went over Peyton Manning’s head and eventually ended up as a safety for the Seattle Seahawks, Denver was far from on their A game.  I looked at it like shanking the first shot out of bounds in a big tournament and never recovering.

So for fun I posted this question on my Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus social networks:

What is the golf equivalent to the Denver Broncos performance in the Super Bowl?

The responses are quite entertaining:

The most popular analogy seemed to be Van De Velde’s meltdown in the British Open at Carnoustie.  Not sure that’s the best analogy as he blew the lead and should have won.  Denver never seemed to get off the tee and never had the lead.
