RIP Canon S95 Camera – Did Not Survive Toilet Swan Dive

It has been a while since I posted a “bonehead of the week” award.  This award goes to…. me.

One of my key tools here at HOG, my pocket sized Canon S95 camera, has died a strange death.  The cause of death was technically drowning, after it spontaneously attempted (and succeeded) a swan dive into the toilet.  No, I was not trying to shoot a selfie or taking pictures of my private parts (need different camera for that with special macro lens).  The camera was in the pocket of a hoodie I was wearing, and as I was getting ready to use the facilities the camera unexpectedly launched itself out of the pocket.

There’s a bit of a delay when you see a $500 electronic item sitting at the bottom of the commode, where you normally see other “objects” which are not to be touched.  Not sure if that slight pause was kiss of death or not, but it is definitely odd to have to reach into the pot and dig something out.  First time I’ve done that, and hopefully the last.

I’ve used this great camera for many on course photos, videos, and many product photos.  It has been a great tool in my arsenal since clear back in 2011.  I’ve captured thousands of photos with it.  It had a good run.  Unfortunately I’m not really positioned to replace it at the moment.  On a blog budget, one doesn’t have an extra $500+ sitting there waiting to be spent on equipment.  And, more honestly, I’ve spent all my money on remote control multi-rotor helicopter parts for my aerial photo and video ventures.

$500+ you ask?  I don’t go with cheapo point and shoot cameras.  Though this is pocket sized, it is a much higher quality unit with a much wider lens than an average camera of this size.

I’ve inquired with Canon about repairs, but I’ve already repaired this one once after taking photos in a sandstorm.  We’ll see what they say, hopefully soon.

Trash9Network Cutting 35 Full Time Employees

Hartford Business is reporting that Trash9Network, sorry 69Network, oh… I mean Back9Network has let go 35 full time employees, or 41% of its workforce.  The move is “a thoughtful strategy that will allow the network to remain competitive and produce engaging content while growing the golf lifestyle,” according to CEO Charles Cox.

Why not cut those employees?  I think it is good business move.  No need to pay all those workers when all your content is re-posted instagram feeds of slutty women’s photos.  A cheap or free teenage intern can do that.

One of the Strangest Weeks in Golf – Tiger’s Toofie and Robert Allenby’s Alleged Kidnapping

I’ve not commented about the latest strange happenings in the golf world as of yet. I’m sort of sitting on my proverbial couch, eating proverbial popcorn, and watching the freakshow unfold.

Toothless Tiger Woods

Toothless Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods: Tough and Ruthless or Rough and Toothless?

First off we have the toothless Tiger Woods.  Apparently he was in Italy to watch his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn compete in a ski race.  In the hustle to get positioning, a camera man knocked out Tiger’s front tooth, the discolored one.  Tiger is no fan of the media at all.  I can imagine there was a nice, pleasant discussion following said de-toothing.

For the record by the way, the discolored tooth Tiger had was not as a result of his ex wife Elin Nordegren knocking it out on that crazy Thanksgiving night.  The tooth was discolored for years before that.  Many uninformed news outlets and golf social networks have claimed that the discolored tooth was because of Elin, but it is not.  Get your facts straight.

Tiger is playing in Phoenix at the Phoenix Open next week, a tournament he said he would not play in again.  It will be interesting to see if he has had the tooth fixed by then, and if the media will have the balls to inquire about what happened.  Maybe he’s waiting for Obamacare to kick in.

Robert Allenby’s story gets more and more strange

Robert Allenby Kidnapping

At the Sony Open Robert Allenby missed the cut.  That would be the best thing to happen to him that weekend.  News came out that he had been kidnapped, robbed, beaten, put in the trunk of a car, and dumped in a park six miles from the wine bar he had been patronizing.  Over the last week the story has gotten more and more fishy, and eyewitnesses are coming forward with different stories.  The latest stories are saying he was drunk and fell on his face, on a rock.  One story even includes a strip club, not a wine bar.

Odd things which stand out to me:  Allenby did not contact the police immediately after the kidnapping.  Also, he’s never appeared with any bandages.  Seems strange.

I’d better pop more popcorn for this one.

Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky

DJ and Paulina Gretzky are now parents.  Dustin is gearing up for a return to golf, and denies any rumors of cocaine use.

My question is, will Paulina be breast feeding?  Golf Digest could get some even bigger boob photos for their next “fitness” article if so!

Is this photo about golf or Paulina Gretzky's boobs? You be the judge.

More popcorn please, with butter.

Check Out the Dimple Pattern on the New 2015 Bridgestone Golf eSeries Golf Balls

Bridgestone Golf has been doing a lot with dimple design in their eSeries.  The eSeries includes the e5, e6, and e7.   Previously, they did a dimple-in-dimple design, which carried over into their tour balls, the B300 series.  I’ve enjoyed the performance of said dimple pattern in the B330 model.

I just received some samples of the new eSeries for 2015 which feature an even more interesting dimple pattern. Below is a photo of the neat sample box.

Sample Box

These balls have a flower-leaf-like pattern where there are circular dimples in the center with irregular hexagon shaped leaves around them. Bridgestone calls it “Web Dimple” technology. The circular dimple still features the dimple-in-dimple pattern. See the image below, with the hexagonal leave shaped dimples highlighted.

The dimple patterns between the e5, e6, and e7 are slightly different to the naked eye. That’s likely how they get the different flight characteristics.

Thanks to Srixon for considering me as one of their “key industry influencers.” As said influencer, I get the privilege of playing the new 2015 Z-Star and Z-Star XV golf balls before they hit the market on February 6th. This nice box arrived on my doorstep yesterday.

I’ve reviewed the Z-Stars as well as the Z-Star XV in the past. They’re awesome golf balls. Really, there aren’t many companies out there making crappy golf balls! The technology is so good now.

I do recall that the XV is a very high compression, like 110ish.  Too high for my swing speed, but I’ll try these new ones out anyway. The regular flavor Z-Star though, is perfect for my game. Love those.

Weather permitting I hope to test these golf balls out soon.  It is winter here and golf rounds in northern Utah this time of year are not common.  Right now we’re skiing!

I’ve snapped a few pictures of the new Z-Stars for you to check out in the HOG Srixon 2015 Z-Star Gallery.
