Poll: Should women be allowed to play in PGA Tour events?

mchellewie“These guys….ahem…and gals are good?”

Fifteen-year-old Michelle Wie has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic July 7-10 in Silvas, Ill. She is also attempting to qualify for the men’s US Open. She played earlier this year at the Sony in January where she missed the cut.

The new poll addresses an interesting question: Should women be allowed to play in PGA Tour events?

I’m of the thought that if they can properly qualify and compete then sure. I do not believe it is fair for a popular woman (like Wie) to gain entry into a PGA Tour tournament just because they are a good TV draw. There are guys who are staking their life savings and future on the chance to play on the PGA Tour. Though their playing resumes may be better, they are not 15 year old females who can bomb the driver 290 yards and therefore don’t get the chance?

I believe at some point Wie is going to have to actually live up to her “potential.” She hasn’t even won an LPGA event yet. Let’s stop putting the cart in front of the horse.

I also wonder what image LPGA golfers may get if they do start playing against the men on a regular basis. Will it be an embarrassment for them? Will they just get their lunch handed to them on a daily basis? I believe that scenario is highly likely.

So take a second to cast your vote (lower left column) and we’ll see what the “pundits” have to say.

Colonial Round 2, Sergio’s Foul Mouth

Round 2 of the Colonial is in the books. Kenny Perry is now atop the leaderboard after going 65, 63. His driving average is 321.3, and his GIR is over 80%. That is some hot golf. Patrick Sheenan was hot in round 1 with a 62 but cooled off with a 72. Other notable players who were cold (and missed the cut): Chris DiMarco, Davis Love III (what is up with DLIII this year?) Todd Hamilton, Mike Weir and Sergio Garcia.

Sergio continued his putting woes and he had some “issues” on 18 today when his drive went behind a tree. He attempted to punch one out from under the tree, but the tree won the battle. The live cameras caught some very clear expletives including “F**K ME.” Serge, I know how you feel man.

My 2nd round of 18 today was at Hidden Valley Country Club here in my town. This course is amazing. It has 27 beautiful tree lined holes with immaculate fairways and greens. I often tell my friends that the tee boxes at HVCC putt better than the public courses’ greens around here…

Up until a fancy Tom Fazio course opened down the road, this was Golf Digest’s #1 course in the state. (It is my favorite and I still think it is #1 in the state).

The shot here is of the 18th hole. This is a par 5, straight up hill. I’ve only reached it in two once (driver driver). Mike Weir played here and reached it easily with driver 3 iron and he’s a “short hitter.”

This time of year here is great because the grass and trees are lush, the sky is blue, and the mountains are still snow capped.

I have more photos of HVCC and many other golf photos in my forum’s photo gallery. CLICK HERE TO GO THERE!

Nice Par

Wow what a great day. It was sunny and 80 with total blue skies. I played two of my favorite courses today. The first was with my usual Thursday group. Then 2nd round was with my pop at his club which is an amazing 27 hole layout.

My pop and I played with one other friend of his, a 20 handicapper who always wins $2 from me because he gets strokes everywhere.

We’re on the 4th hole which is a downhill 176 yard par 3. There are thick trees right and left and a heavy left to right wind. Mr. 20 handicapper pushes one deep into the forest for a lost ball. He re-tees and knocks it right at the flag. He says “go in the hole” just like we all do. I say “Fred Couples, TPC 17 when he got a par with a hole in one on his 2nd shot.” Yeah whatever.

So we get to the green and sure enough, his ball is IN THE HOLE. He made par on this par 3 after re-teeing. Hole in one….er 3. He looks at us and says “that f’ing thing is in the hole!” I replied “nice par.”
