Monday finish at the 2005 PGA Championship

ALERT: Weather delay at the PGA Championship.

Rats! We have to wait until tomorrow to see if Phil can get his 2nd major, or if Elk, Bjorn, VJ or someone else gets it. Tiger doesn’t have to wait around since he’s already done at -2.

The leaderboard as it stands when play was suspended:

Phil Mickelson -4 after 13 holes (he’s putting for par on 14)
Steve Elkington -3 after 15
Thomas Bjorn -3 after 14
Tiger Woods -2 finished
Vijay Singh -2 after 15
Davis Love III -2 after 13
Retief Goosen -1 after 16

Does this delay help or hurt any of the contenders? I think perhaps it may hurt Elk.

DLIII and Phil in the final group at the PGA

dliiiWell, well, well. Davis Love III shot -2 in round three of the PGA Championship to put himself into a tie with Phil Mickelson. Phil barely “held on” to his lead by shooting two over for the day.

Meanwhile three notable rounds would be Tiger shooting 66 to get back to even par, and Thomas Bjorn tying the course record with a 63. Bjorn’s 63 got him into third place. Daly putted with his sand wedge for a while after having some kind of “disagreement” with his putter.

Sunday should shape up to be quite interesting. Instamarv surely sees a low 60’s round and a victory for Tiger. While the Phil haters will be rooting for anyone but him. I wonder what the pressure will do to Phil and DLIII. Will they both melt down or are we in for a duel to remember?

I think Tiger will make his presence known but fall short. I think Bjorn emptied his clip today. You don’t usually see two really low rounds together on Sat and Sun in majors. Phil and DLIII may be concentrating on each other but a back door victory by Vijay, Appleby or even Ben Curtis is highly likely. Ben Curtis does know how to win via the back door after all…

Can Phil hold on?

philAfter the 2nd round of the PGA Championship Phil Mickelson has a 4 stroke lead at -8. Quite honestly, this large lead came as a total surprise to me. Phil hasn’t been playing well enough to show signs of a pending major championship win.

It just goes to show what a hot putter can do for Phil. He hasn’t been stellar in his GIR or driving accuracy so far. When he shot his 59 in Hawaii earlier this year, his putter was the reason and not his driving accuracy.

The only question about Phil is can he hold on?

A bigger story than Phil leading the PGA is that Tiger made the cut. The cut line was +4 and Tiger needed to birdie the 18th hole to be there. Fortunately for Tiger, 18 (par 5) wasn’t too difficult. He knocked a 7 iron on in two and two putted no problem. Tiger’s all major cut streak continues.

Memo to TNT: Charles Barkley is NOT someone I want doing commentary on golf. I already know Vijay Singh is a “good player.” And please for the love of God TNT, don’t show Chuck’s swing on TV again.

Memo to Andrew Ciciliano who was filling in on the Jim Rome radio show today:
It is NOT something new for Phil to hit long drives. He IS a long player. It is nothing new for Phil to hit bombs. I don’t recommend a full time golf broadcast commentary gig for you Andrew.

49 minutes?

I got home today from a morning round of golf and work in the afternoon. I just sat down to watch today’s first round of the PGA Championship on my Tivo. Unfortunately someone in my family canceled my recording 49 minutes in.

Instead of the PGA, I have the choice of Lizzy McGuire, Oprah or Dr. Phil on my recordings list. You could fry an egg on my head right now… AHHHHHGGG!

So the short story is we have a logjam at -3 after round one, with Phil one of them. Meanwhile Tiger is at +5, 8 shots off the lead? Wow, talk about the opposite start everyone anticipated.
