HOG welcomes Megan Heckeroth

megan heckeroth You may have noticed a post with a pretty face on it a couple of weeks back. That pretty face obviously wasn’t mine, it was that of Megen Heckeroth. Megan is an aspiring golf pro. She’s on the road to the LPGA Tour and playing an extensive schedule in the US and in Europe.

“Meg” has already played rounds of golf with the likes of Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie and gave me some nice insight on what it’s like to play a round with Annika. Very cool.

Here’s a quick profile:

* Winner of the 1997 Oregon State Junior Championship First Flight.
* Winner of the 1997 Oregon State High School Championship.
* Four-time winner of the Oregon State High School District Championship (1995-1998).
* Competed in the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open Championship.
* Member of the Ladies European Tour (LET) (2006).

And…Megan will be playing in the 2006 US Women’s Open!

Megan has a very well done and extensive web site with info about her, her schedule, swing videos, lessons, photo galleries and more. Check it out. Her site even tells you what’s in her iPod and what PDA she’s using. How cool is that?

Megan will be posting occasionally RIGHT HERE on HOG as a contributor so everyone give her a warm welcome. She’ll even be doing some Q&A. Megan’s schedule is very busy so there won’t be a specific schedule for her posts so you’ll just have to watch for them.

Courses should be required to warn you if conditions are bad

Today I showed up for my Tuesday league, paid my green fees, tournament fees and skins money….

When I got to the 1st green I then discovered the greens were punched and sanded. Though I have played greens that putted OK when they were punched and sanded before, this was not the case. These holes were about the size of a quarter and deep. The sand wasn’t up to the level of the surface of the green.

I pride myself on my putting and it’s definitely the strength of my game. Conditions like this negate my advantage on the greens and bring my putting stroke to it’s knees.

On the 3rd green I had a 10 foot putt for birdie. The punch holes on this green were pretty bad. About 4 feet off my putter face the ball squarely hit the back of a punch hole, popped about a foot straight up in the air and ended up 5 feet short. I’ve never left a 10 foot putt 5 feet short in my life. I’d had it. I withdrew.

This subject has been talked about for years and blogged about many times. Golf courses should be required to warn you if the greens are punched or the course conditions bad. They should not only warn you about these conditions, they should offer a discount. I don’t think it’s right to pay full price for a course that is in bad condition.

Not only should they warn you when you are there to check in for a round of golf, they should warn you on the phone when you call in to set up your tee time.

So Phil Mickelson won the Masters. How many of you voted for him in the previous HOG poll? 19%. So 19% of you are smart. That’s a much higher number than I expected. Great turnout on this poll with 247 votes. That’s a HOG record.
