The best way to tell what golf accessory I liked the most in 2014 is based on the one I used the most. That is hands down the GolfBuddy VS4 Mini Talking GPS. This thing is so small that it easily fits in my pocket and is not in the way.
I can even push the button through my shorts (I don’t wear pants, hehe) and hear it speak my yardages to me.
I have about 20 golf GPS units, but the VS4 is the one I keep going back to and therefore wins the 2014 Hooked On Golf Blog Product of the Year award for Golf Accessories.
Well played.

I’m thrilled to continue the Hooked On Golf Blog Product of the Year awards, this time with the Best Golf Course award. To qualify for the Best Golf Course award, a course has to have been reviewed and/or played for the first time in the calendar year (2014 for this year). There were many new courses I played this year, from Greg Norman’s Emerald Reef Golf Club in the Bahamas to the Alister MacKenzie design at the University of Michigan, to Paako Ridge in New Mexico.
Factors which go into my decision include course architecture, playing conditions, amenities, vibe, location, staff. In short, the overall experience from when one arrives to the time he/she finishes up the last frosty beverage at the 19th hole.
The two finalists came down to New Mexico’s Paako Ridge and Michigan’s Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club. Both are amazing tracts of land, and both courses have NO homes on the course; not the center of real estate developments. That scores big points with me. Both courses had fantastic conditions when I played. Based on the serenity, the amazing amenities, clubhouse, and the fact that they offer 27 holes, Shepherd’s edges out Paako Ridge for the Hooked On Golf Blog 2015 Best Golf Course Award.
Shepherd’s Hollow is northwest of Detroit about a 45 minute drive, and well worth it. Tip o’ the hat to Shepherd’s Hollow Golf Club for winning this distinguished award. Can’t wait to get back there.

I’m wearing this tremendous 1/4 zip baby alpaca fur sweater by Bobby Jones at this very moment. It is so comfortable that I may wear it even in the summer when it is 104 degrees.
This fantastic, stylish, sharp, classy, and mega-comfortable sweater is hands-down the best apparel item reviewed in 2014 at Hooked On Golf Blog.
By being said best item, I send my congratulations to Bobby Jones for winning the Best Apparel Item award in the 2014 Hooked On Golf Blog Product of the Year Awards! I’m sure this is the most prestigious award collected by Bobby Jones to date.
Well played.
December 30 is a very important birthday for someone. Yeah, you’re probably thinking this is another of the 47.2 billion Tiger Woods birthday posts. It does happen to be Tiger’s 39th birthday, but I’m no bandwagon jumper. There are enough other sites doing that post so I don’t need to do it here.
No, more importantly today is my grandma Myrle’s birthday.
Happy birthday to my awesome grandma. May she rest in peace.
In May of 2014 I put the Tour Edge Exotics XCG7 Beta Fairway Metalwood (yeah long name) in my bag and it has been my gamer ever since. This is the sweetest 3-metalwood I’ve ever hit and is absolutely the best golf club reviewed here at Hooked On Golf Blog in the calendar year of 2014.
Thanks much in part to the XCG7 Beta Fairway Metalwood I recorded more eagles this season than I have in any other. I’m reaching par-5’s in two much more often, some shots ending up inside of 2-3 feet! There’s nothing better than watching your opponent’s shoulders shrink when you drain a 2-foot eagle putt when he just pressed the bet!
When driver is too much or I need to be SURE to hit the fairway at a critical time in the round or the match, the XCG7 is the go-to club and performs perfectly.
The XCG7 is long, sounds sweet, and has a fantastic feel with great feedback. The super-sweet ping sound tells me I just nutted another one.
Not only is the feel and sound of this metalwood fantastic, so is the look. I really like the matte black finish on this club. No obnoxious and busy paint job on this club. The club, not the paint job, does the work.

Congratulations to Tour Edge on winning this year’s Best Golf Club award! Well deserved.
