Tiger Woods announces indefinite leave from professional golf

Just great.  The first year ever in which I have Masters tickets, this happens…

There were some rumors floating around yesterday that Tiger might be announcing a break from golf or that he was quitting completely.  There were also rumors that “Privacy,” Tiger’s yacht, was being fueled and loaded with supplies.  I guess we know a little more now.  Tiger is leaving golf for an indefinite period of time.  I bet I know where the “safe haven” mentioned below is.  Tiger’s home in the Bahamas.

As have been all of Tiger’s official statements, this one came from his web site and is very short and very vague:

I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.

You probably won’t be missing anything at the Masters. Tiger was there last year and wasn’t a factor. It was the Cabrera and Perry show – a really good show at that. Besides, the Masters isn’t about Tiger. It’s about the tradition and no women being allowed and those yucky sandwiches. And it looks like it would be awful for someone with allergies – all of those flowers on the course 🙂

Sucks for you Tony. In this era, a Masters without Tiger is a second class Masters. But maybe you’ll catch a break. Tiger could be back playing by then. Playing golf could wind up being the thing that heals what ails him. That would be the case for me. In the mean time, it sucks for Tiger far worse than it sucks for you.

I’m new to golf but just read “The 100 Sporting Events You Must See Live” which ranks the Masters as the number one sporting event IN THE WORLD to see. Had to get tickets, Tiger Woods or no Tiger Woods!
