Annika back in the winner’s circle

I’m glad that Annika Sorenstam got herself back in the winner’s circle today. She defeated Paula Creamer on the first hole of a playoff at the Stanford International Pro-Am. That marks victory #71.

All due respect to Lorena Ochoa, Annika is still #1 in my book.

With so much talk of Lorena being the new Tiger in the golfing world, it would be easy to forget the likes of Annika Sorenstam. But this is Annika’s 71st victory on the LPGA tour. 71, that is an astounding figure. Lorena has just won 25, nearly one third of the number won by Annika. That just goes on to show don’t count Anika Sorenstam out just yet. Considering the fact that she is coming back from injury, she has had a pretty good year, after all two victories is no mean achievement. The only thing to note is that, both these victories have come in the week when Lorena has not been around and to throw the gauntlet in the ring, Annika would now have to win a tournament with Lorena in the field. If she can notch up a few more victories this season, then she will definitely be in a position to challenge Lorena next season to regain her number one ranking.

The next tournament will be pretty big. With Annika in good form and Lorena chasing a record fifth onsecutive win, it would make for a great battle.

This week’s SemGroup Championship might be witness to something historic and Lorena would definitely want to win again and create history and nip all the stories of Annika making a charge towards the number one position in the bud.
