Phil has now put his 3rd shot on 18 in the greenside bunker. Fried egg city. He HAS to get up and down for a playoff. He has all but HANDED the U.S. OPEN to Geoff Ogilvy by making terrible decisions on the last hole.
He should have NEVER hit driver off the tee on 18. All he had to do was bunt three 8 irons onto the green and make par to win, bogey to tie. This is an all time meltdown on the last hole. It’s absolutely shocking.
Can he do it?….Oh man now he has to chip in from the rough.
THIS IS ALL OUT STUPIDITY. IT’S AMAZING. IT’S SHOCKING. IT’S SAD.
I said it once and I will say it again, I just don’t think that your boy “philly cheesesteak” as you call him has the mental toughness. What the hell is he doing shooting driver when bogey in the clubhouse is perfect and he probably would have won the playoff. This has to be other then Goosen’s dibacle, the worst exhibition in a major. To me, this will take the pressure off of Tiger to win the British and not have worry about the “Phil Slam”.
Replace your divots!!
What do you think the odds are that you could have made a bogey on the 18th hole if you were told “just make a bogey and you get in a playoff”? You’re a reasonably skilled golfer. Just curious.
I was flamed, briefly, for insisting that I could do it 8 times out of 10. A pair of hybrids, a chip if I missed the green, and two comfortable putts.
I bet he hasn’t got that silly little grin on his face now!
Well done to Geoff though – I think ’95 was the last year an Aussie won a major (Elkington?).
TDS: Golf Bloggers recap Mickelson Meltdown
“It was right there and I let it go. I just cannot believe I did that. I am such an idiot.” – Phil Mickelson What will Phil do next? Sitting pretty with a chance to win his third consecutive…
and where was BONES? Why didn’t bones say “PHIL: put the damn driver in the bag. You’ve hit 2 fairways today. Punch a 3 iron down the middle and knock a 4 iron on the green. All we need is bogey man. That’s all we need.”
The hole is 450. He said he felt if he missed the fairway with a 4-wood he wouldn’t be able to reach the green. This following a 220-yard 6-iron off the tee of a par 3 earlier in the day…???
Exactly. Knock an iron down the middle 230-240. Knock another one down the middle 220. Get up and down for par or bogey. Done deal, US OPEN champ…
