Masters Augusta NationalPhil has the Bell South in hand and who cares that much anyway? It’s time for Masters week, Masters nuggets, Masters mania!

My good friend Bob has had Masters tickets for roughly 50 years. Unfortunately this year he had them taken away. Naturally I was to be his guest. Bob told me this great story about Jack Nicklaus’ 1986 Masters victory, his 6th green jacket.

Jack Nicklaus’ final Masters victory is always a highlight during Masters week, and throughout the year. They always show his putt on 17 for birdie to put him into the lead where he raises his putter up when the ball goes in the hole. That is only part of the story about 17 according to my friend Bob.

On that Sunday Bob placed himself in the landing area of the tee shots on 17. Jack’s tee shot landed just a few feet from him. The ball’s final resting place was right on a root of an old oak tree. When Jack and Jackie (his caddy and son) got to the ball perched on the root they surveyed the situation. Jack turned to Jackie and asked “what do you think?” Jackie turned to Jack and said “It’s an easy 8 iron for you. It’s a 7 iron for me, but it’s an easy 8 iron for you.”

Jack then took the 8 iron out and picked the ball so cleanly off the root it didn’t even leave a mark. The ball of course landed on the green and spun back to where Jack would make that most famous of Masters putts.

Now you know the rest of the story.

Tournament ball to be used in 2007 Masters

An inside connection of mine at Augusta National has informed me that on Monday there will be a big announcement. Hootie will be announcing the introduction of a “Masters” or “tournament” ball which will be required during play of the 2007 Masters.

This tournament ball will have more spin and fly shorter than today’s balls. The higher spin will make hitting straight drives more difficult and cut back the distance the ball flies.

A paraphrased quote from Hootie though my friend:

“We’ve lengthened Augusta National for the last time. With the introduction of the tournament ball, the shot making skills that Bobby Jones envisioned when designing Augusta National will once again be a part of determining a champion.”

Augusta has already provided specifications to all the major golf ball manufacturers so that their endorsers can still play the ball they’re paid to play.
