The LPGA Tour announced that this year will be the last for the Corning Classic, a tourney which has had the same sponsor since 1979. They were unable to find new sponsors.

LPGA Corning Classic Jack Benjamin:

“This is a most difficult decision for all of us. Everyone involved with the event is passionate about it and about the LPGA players who have been a part of it for more than three decades.

But the realities are that the revenue opportunities in the marketplace will not support the components needed to successfully host a major event like this in our community moving forward.”

The LPGA is the canary in the coal mine for loss of Tournament revenue..expect some large sized changes in the PGA Tour purse sizes and sponsorship committments….the interesting aspect is that the mega money events may still hold up offshore…
The LPGA is really going to suffer, however. There is..though many will strongly deny it..a real lack of identification with many Tour players..and when a corporation is on the bubble it’s just another reason to forego the expense and general butt busting it takes to put one of the tournaments on…..
