Had a fantastic day today with some friends on the golf course and then friends/family tonight. It was a good birthday. Still not too late to get me something, just make sure it isn’t golf gear! A trip to St. Andrews or Bandon Dunes would be good…
So for some reason I like to make my own birthday cakes. I usually try to employ a golf theme and this year was no different.
I used a Callaway 3-wood I found in a hazard at River Oaks on the 2nd hole. What do you think?
Friday was a much better day scoring wise for Tiger Woods. With a -3 round of 68 he made the cut and jumped up 46 positions to tie for 40th. He still isn’t hitting fairways and ended up ditching the driver for many driving holes and electing to hit 3-wood. Oddly, most media say he putted better Friday, yet had two more total putts. How can that be? Greens in regulation.
Driving
Tiger’s driving distance increased to 270 from 257, despite going to 3-wood on many of his shots. He only hit 43% of his fairways Friday versus 50% on Thursday. But he was at least able to get himself into position to better hit greens.
Putting
Tiger’s total putts increased from 27 to 29 on Friday. But the crucial stat is the putts per green in regulation, which was greatly improved at 1.643. Add that to the fact that Tiger hit more greens in regulation and that is how he scored so much better.
Greens In Regulation
The most improved stat, and biggest reason for the lower score, is Tiger’s greens in regulation. He jumped from 50% to 78%. Hitting more greens and making less putts per green is the difference and why he made the cut.
Grade
I’m calling yesterday’s round a C-. Not enough to knock him out of the possibility of making the cut. Based on that, I’m calling Friday’s a B+ because it was good enough to make the cut.
Weekend
So Tiger has made the cut and will be around for the weekend. It will be interesting to see if he can climb up the leaderboard or not. After two days he’s a full seven shots behind tournament leader Paul Casey.
In Madrid Spain at the Madrid Masters, Scottish golfer Elliott Saltman recorded an ace on the par-3 third hole at El Enchin Golf Hotel.
So did he win a Mercedes? A BMW? Some other brand of new car?
NO.
Mr. Saltman (ironic pun) is the proud owner of a delectable hole in one prize, his body weight in heavily cured and salted Iberico ham. And that isn’t a small ham either. Saltman weighs in at 240 pounds. The Iberico ham Saltman claimed is a delicacy in Spain, and 240lbs worth comes in at a price tag of $10,722.
“This is going to last me until next Christmas, never mind this one. I’ve been trying to lose some weight but I’m glad now I’ve not lost that much.”
It remains to be seen if Saltman can make the cut in the Madrid Masters after an opening round 75, but he’ll still be bringing home the bacon.
I watched most of Tiger Woods’s 1st round of the Frys.com Open yesterday. After shooting a +2 round of 73 he is tied for 86th place.
Let’s take a look at the stats from his first round and see what is good and what is bad.
Driving Accuracy: 50%
Same old Tiger here. Even though he says his “start lines” are tighter and the ball is flying straighter, Tiger’s tee shots found the rough and many fairway bunkers. Tied for 104th in driving accuracy. Tiger says his start lines are tighter lately. Perhaps he shouldn’t worry about start lines as much as “end lines?”
I remember the first time I saw a Mac computer. It was somewhere around 1986. I especially remember how blown away I was that with that computer you could print what was on your screen and it would look the same on the paper as it did on the screen. To that point there were only dot matrix printers which printed whatever internal fonts they had and the print looked nothing like the document on the screen. How amazing I thought, for a computer printout to look the same on the paper as it did on the screen. I got my first Mac soon after.
Some 50 Mac desktops and laptops later I’m still a Mac user and Apple fan. I even owned three Apple Newtons, the predecessor to PDA’s, the iPhone and the iPad.
Thanks Steve Jobs
I was very saddened to hear of the death of Steve Jobs yesterday. He was truly the Thomas Edison of our generation. The products he invented I use on a daily basis and they greatly enhance my personal and business worlds. My desktop is a Mac Mini with two 24 inch screens. My laptop is a 17 inch MacBook Pro. My mobile devices are an iPhone and most recently an iPad. With all of these cool products I create, write, edit and administer my golf web sites. I couldn’t do what I do without my Apple stuff from editing photos and videos to writing golf blog posts to programming HTML, CSS and PHP. I even use my Apple products for entertainment and music production. Used them in my recording studio for nearly 20 years.
Hats off to Steve Jobs for his vision and his passion for creating products which truly benefit people and change the way they live in such a positive way. Cheers to you Steve and thanks for all the cool gear. You’ll be missed and I hope Apple can continue on the innovative and creative path you’ve started.
