As one of the world’s (self proclaimed) top golf web geeks, I’m always working on a new golf website or some kind of digital golf project. When winter hits here in HOG World Headquarters (Salt Lake City), I give myself a “winter project” to work on during all those days/months I can’t spend playing golf due to snow. My 2011-2012 winter project was to fill a need here in Utah that wasn’t filled. I wanted to have a complete listing of all Utah golf courses with phone numbers and vital course information at my fingertips, especially viewable in my iPhone. My buddies and I would talk about our next tee time in the parking lot of the golf course, and we didn’t have all the phone numbers to all the courses. Right then I decided to build a complete listing of every golf course in the state of Utah, complete with contact info, course stats, photos and even playing tips. Utah Golf Guru was born.
I made searching courses easy. The menu bar of each page has a search form. Plus the “courses” menu allows searching for courses of all types: public, private, military as well as searching by region.
Here’s a sample photo of one of the hundreds of featured photos below. This one was taken at the Sand Hollow Links Course in southwestern Utah.
This past weekend I put some of the finishing touches on the site, making sure it is viewable on all formats, from desktop to tablet to smartphone. If you are coming to Utah to golf, or you live here, UtahGolfGuru.com is the place to find all the course info you need. Hope you like it.
And now, what is the winter project for 2012-2013? Hmmmm…. working on that one.

I’m happy to report that once again the Hooked On Golf Blog (HOG) World Tour will be stopping in Orlando, Florida for the PGA Merchandise Show. I’ll be at the show all day Thursday and Friday, then competing in the annual Battle of the Golf Blogs golf tournament Saturday. Can’t wait. Stay tuned for my take and angle on all the new golf equipment and golf apparel coming out, complete with lots of photos and videos!
<whine>I considered not going this year. This is a bit of a tough gig. I’ve been going to the show for years, covering all the new gear and happenings at the world’s biggest golf show, but it is hard on the pocket book. You see, us bloggers don’t have corporate credit cards we can simply charge to the “company.” I am the company. I pay for all my airfare, food, hotels, rental car and whatnot out of my own pocket, so I can report my angle from the show.</whine>
Meetings
If you or your company will be at the show, I’ll try to meet up with you. Email me (if you have my email) or use the site contact form to send me a note.
I’m going to do things a little different this year. I’m not setting specific appointments. I’m never able to get away from one and to the next in time as the meetings always seem to go long. I’ll be doing interviews on video as I have for years: probably the first blogger to do the POV format I’ve done. This year I’ll have a little wrinkle in that format. Stay tuned.
On Twitter Nike Golf mentioned a “big” addition to their tour staff would be announced on January 7th. That day was yesterday and the only player announcement I got from them was of the signing of Seung Yul Noh. Most of course, assumed the big announcement was that Rory McIlory would be joining their staff.
Now that I’ve received the official parting press release from Jumeirah Group, announcing the end of their 5-year deal with Rory McIlory (below), I would expect to see the Nike announcement coming shortly. Here’s the Jumeirah press release below:
I just went through some photos of my trip to the Masters/Augusta National last year (2012). What a place. I’m not sure how many pimento cheese sandwiches I ate, because I lost count. It was that many in the two days I was there. Now I’m making my own pimento cheese sandwiches and dare I say, they might just be better than the ones at Augusta, though the atmosphere isn’t quite the same. Some history here…
Megachomp
As a popular golf blog I receive a lot of product submissions for review. So many that I can’t possibly get to them all. I prioritize them as best I can, and review the ones I think the HOG readers will be most entertained and informed by. Over the years I started to receive food submissions strangely enough. I received so many in fact, that I started up an entirely different web site to review food and beverages. That site isn’t worked as much as HOG, but I do regularly post those food/drink reviews over at Megachomp.com. Check it out.
Tonya’s Gourmet Cheese Spreads
Today’s is a food review, but this one isn’t going to Megachomp. There’s a golf angle…
Tonya’s Carolina Blend Cheese Spread
I’ve been greatly enjoying Tonya’s Carolina Blend – Gourmet Cheese Spread. This is a very tasty pimento cheese blend with all sorts of other good stuff in there including diced olives and jalapenos.
Tonya’s calls their spreads appetizers but I make “sammiches” from them which rival those I’ve had at Augusta National. Other suggested uses are as toppings on hamburgers or french fries. I may need to try that.
A tub of the spread runs $5.99 from Tonya’s web site, a lot cheaper than Masters tickets!
I’ll be posting about the other spreads I’m trying on Megachomp.com, so watch for the rest there! Happy chomping.
