PGA Tour Gallery Members Are STILL Yelling Dumb Things? Really? SHUT UP ALREADY

2012 U.S. Open Champion Webb SimpsonI don’t do a lot of “reporting” of PGA Tour or professional golf here, the web is overflowing with people regurgitating that information.  Perhaps the most useless reporting is the photos of the winner’s bag.  Great!  Pictures of hand-made tour-only clubs any regular golfer can’t get, and if they could they would not be able to hit them….  That’s a post rant for another day though.

After a small “procedure” I had on Friday of this past weekend, I was couch bound as per doctor’s orders so I finally watched a full broadcast of professional golf.  I watched the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.  The FIRST thing I heard on the broadcast thankfully was not a discussion about Tiger Woods.   Perhaps worse than that, it was some idiot, a lady this time, yelling at the top of her lungs “mashed potatoes” just as Adam Scott hit a tee shot.

Really?  Are people STILL yelling these stupid things like “you da man,” and “get in the hole” (on 475 yard par-4’s of course), and “mashed potatoes?”  REALLY?

STOP.  PLEASE.  It is no longer funny.  In fact, it is dumb.  Those of you who are yelling these boneheaded things are showing the millions of viewers who the dumbest person in the gallery is, YOU.  Show some class.  Shut up.

Assuming these boneheads don’t shut up, WHEN will the PGA Tour grow some golf balls and start kicking these idiots out of the event?

167 Tees and NO Sand Found in Dad’s Golf Bag

Sand BagMy pops knows that whenever he needs some new golf gear, I’ll take care of him.  His old golf bag at his club, a cart bag, was hammered.  He needed a new one.  So I gave him a fantastic new bag which was complete with a large skull on it.  Perfect for a 77 year old country club type.  What a rebel.  I received this great email from him after he switched over to the new bag:

Just transferred golf items to new bag. Thank you for a much needed upgrade. Definitely need slim, slim club covers so clubs cam fit in slots. In transfer I discovered 28 ball markers, 12 pencils, 22 ball mark repair pools, 3 pairs of golf gloves (which I never use), $1.22 in small coins, 3 foreign coins, 33 golf balls in various stages of decomposition and — drum roll — 167 tees!! (After extensive search, no sand was found in my old bag!) p

That’s the “what’s in my dad’s golf bag” post…  Definitely no sand in his bag.  He’s a player.

Happy 10th Blogiversary To Golf Blogger

Golf Blogger

Happy 10th blogday or blogiversary to my good friend John Retzer, also known as the Golf Blogger. GolfBlogger.com is one of the few blogs still in existence from the crop of “original” golf blogs which started appearing in around 2004. John has been a rock in golf blogging, cranking out over 9,400 posts in his 10 years.  That’s almost 1000 posts/year.  Do the math.  I can’t spit them out that fast.

I’ve had the pleasure of playing golf with the famous Golf Blogger, in his home state of Michigan.  Michigan is one of the best places in the country for golf and I’m envious of John’s locale.  He is reviewing tons of Michigan golf courses.  There’s probably not a better resource for Michigan golf than GolfBlogger.com.

John has been an inspiration and a friend in the world of golf blogging.  As he and I have both noticed, many thousands of golf blogs have come and gone.  Golf “journalists” and large golf media outlets now call their articles blogs, just to be cool.  But we know who the original and coolest golf blogs are, and continue to be.

Tip of the cap to Golf Blogger.  Cheers friend.  Here’s to another 10 years.  We need to get our 2nd match scheduled soon.

I’ll admit that I didn’t know who Jack Fleck was until about a year ago.  That’s when I read my friend Neil Sagebiel’s book about Jack Fleck and the 1955 U.S. Open: The Longest Shot – Jack Fleck, Ben Hogan, and Pro Golf’s Greatest Upset at the 1955 U.S. Open.  The story of Fleck’s victory over Ben Hogan in a playoff at the 1955 U.S. Open is without a doubt the biggest cinderella story, biggest upset in golf history.

Jack Fleck passed away at the age of 92 yesterday.

Here’s a great synopsis of Fleck as written by Neil on his Facebook page yesterday:

“Jack was born in Bettendorf, Iowa, on November 7, 1921. He became a golf professional at the age of 17. He served in the Navy during World War II and was part of the Normandy invasion. He beat his idol Ben Hogan in an 18-hole playoff to win the 1955 U.S. Open, one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports. When Hogan died in 1997, Jack decided not to attend the funeral because he didn’t want his presence to detract in any way from the remembrance of his idol. “
