I love golf course pictures

I’m just a sucker for golf course pictures. Since I got my new Canon SD400 camera I’ve been snapping tons of ’em. This cam is so small I just keep it in my pocket in case anything cool happens. Check out my new friend I met in today’s round below.

Here’s the #1 green at Hidden Valley CC (below). You can see the leaves up on the mountains are starting to change colors. The weather is beautiful now, but the leaves changing signals the coming of winter. Winter around here means snow and courses shutting down. I’m not looking forward to snow.

I’ve currently got over 160 golf photos in the Web Country Club photo gallery, including about 75 from Augusta National.

It happens to even the best players

2nd round of the tournament of champions at Wolf Creek:

I did play much better on day two, and improved my score by 10 shots. There was a ton of room for improvement.

I was basically golfing for fun since I’d shot myself out of the tournament. Having shot a poor round I was paired with other players who didn’t play well the first day as well. Yep, we were up at the crack of dawn as the worst scores teed off first. Each of the players I was paired with was either a club champ or won a certain qualifying amateur event. These two sticks were +2 handicaps.

Stick #1

Stick #1 was the returning champ of this tournament. This guy is the longest hitter I’ve ever seen. His 3 iron goes about 10 yards farther than my driver, and I’m not a short driver. And from 240 out on the par 5 ninth hole he knocked a six iron pin-high to a back pin. (No wind, flat ground and over water no less). He went driver 6 iron, I went driver, 7 iron, pitching wedge. He then 3 putted for par. I saw a total of six 3 putt pars over the two days in my groups. I never thought to ask him about his wedges. Heck, if your 6 iron goes 240 then does your PW go 200? How does one figure wedge shots when nearly all of your approach shots are wedges from 200 in? Just wondering…

But stick #1 had putting issues. Somehow on these lightning fast greens he was leaving all of his putts short. He left downhill putts short on greens that were as fast as your kitchen table at a 45 degree angle.

Stick #1, a +2 handicap shot a blistering 82.

Stick #2

I was feeling for stick #2. He had his family in our own personal “gallery.” He was struggling with his tee shots. He kept knocking his shots either OB or in hazards. He managed a 12 on the same #9 hole that stick #1 reached in two. When we got to the tough 18th tee, he informed us that he needed par to shoot 100. He put his approach shot about 10 feet above the hole. On this course that is almost certain death. Over his birdie putt he proudly announced “this is for 99.” He barely nudged the putt and it ran a good 15 feet below the hole. He then knocked that 15 footer solidly into the back of the cup for a 100.

After we signed our scorecards he took his into the pro shop and got a photocopy of his round for his personal bulletin board.

This just goes to show that when it goes bad it can go really bad. It doesn’t matter what handicap you are, that 100 is there waiting for you.

imitationI have this cool feature in my admin section here that lets me see incoming links. This is nice because I can see who is linking to me. I then go check out their site. If I see something cool I’ll link back.

So I found a new incoming link this morning from The Sultan Of Swing Urban Golf Academy. Looks like a new golf blog. Cool! So I start checking out this blog and something looked strangely familiar there. Their blogroll is a carbon copy of mine! Their roll does have one more link in there: mine.

Memo to Sultan Of Swing: It is bad blog karma to hijack other blog posts or info and use it as your own. At the least you should credit the source. It would be even better to contact the other person to see if they are cool with using some of their data if it isn’t a straight link. I’ve done this many times with my pals at The Sand Trap, Golf Grouch, MJonGolf, Bogey Lounge etc.

I’m not pissed but I would have preferred an email asking if it would be cool to use my blogroll since it is one of the best and most complete golf blogrolls out there. 😉 I would certainly say yes in that situation.

Campbell is stackin’ bank

U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell won the World Match Play Championship on Sunday by closing out Paul McGinley on the 35th hole. For his efforts Mr. Campbell (or Cambo as he likes to be called on his web site) gets a check for about $1,800,000. That is the largest payout in golf.

To utilize some rap terminology:
Campbell is “stackin’ bank.”

Gore wins first PGA Tour event

goreWow! Only six weeks after Jason Gore got his tour card, he has notched is first victory at the 84 Lumber Classic. He managed to control his nerves enough to eke out a 1 stroke victory over Carlos Franco.

Gore has been one of the biggest stories in golf this year and the story is just getting better. I still think you have to give the nod to Tiger as the biggest story of the year for winning two majors, but Gore is right there in 2nd place.
